Leadership Workshop: ADVANCE Leadership Workshop

Since 2008, the Developing Diverse Departments (D3) project has offered a leadership development workshop series for women and faculty of color. The leadership development workshop series consists of three panel discussion sessions interleaved with three concurrent discussion sessions designed to motivate tenured women and faculty of color to enter into line leadership roles. Climate Workshop: ADVANCE Climate Workshop

The Department Head Climate Workshop series focuses on cultivating a supportive and inclusive department climate for diverse faculty. Using the results of a survey of the department faculty and staff, the participating departments develop action plans to enhance the climate in their own department. Profile: Emerging Leader: Emerging Leader ADVANCE Scholar: Amy Grunden

Amy Grunden was born in Lakeland, Florida. As the daughter of an active-duty serviceman, she lived in a number of places during her childhood in the U.S. and Germany. As a child, Amy had a keen interest in the biological sciences. She went on to major in microbiology and cell sciences at the University of Florida. After graduating with her B.S. in 1993, she continued her former undergraduate research project at the University of Florida and graduated with a Ph.D. in 1996. Amy next served as a post-doctoral research associate at the University of Georgia. In July, 2000, Amy joined the faculty in the Department of Microbiology at NC State as an assistant professor. Profile: Senior Leader: Senior Leader ADVANCE Scholar: Christine Grant

Christine Grant earned a B.S. in chemical engineering from Brown University and M.S. and Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology. She joined the NC State faculty in 1989. Grant’s responsibilities as an associate dean include overseeing programs such as on-campus professional development seminars and trips to funding agencies to build collaboration. Her research focuses on surface and interfacial phenomena related to the areas of biomaterials, electronic materials, and polymer thin films. Her mentoring work has earned many top honors, including an NSF Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring.

Developing Diverse Departments (D3) at NC State

Mission

The mission of Developing Diverse Departments is to spark a shift in attitudes toward a diverse and inclusive climate and create paths of diffusion and discussion of these ideas throughout the NC State faculty.

Goals

Increase the number of women and faculty of color in the professoriate
Create a climate that promotes the success of all faculty
Eliminate factors that elevate women’s and ethnic minorities’ risk of leaving NCSU faculty positions.

Advance Scholars will be a core group of faculty who have committed to becoming knowledgeable and effective change agents within college and university culture. They will be at the center of increasing circles of influence designed to transfer knowledge about bias and culture change into communities of current and emerging academic leaders. Small and large workshops will bring together the project participants in two targeted groups to share insights via informal and formal discussions and presentations.

Target Groups

Deans, center directors, and department heads who are actively and effectively creating conditions within their units that are favorable for advancing women and faculty of color.
Women and faculty of color who are emerging as academic leaders.

Developing Diverse Departments at NC State is funded by NSF ADVANCE PAID (Partnerships in Adaptation, Implementation, and Dissemination) grant number 0820013. We’d like to acknowledge the ADVANCE Institutional Transformation projects at the University of Michigan (STRIDE), the University of Washington, the University of Wisconsin (WISELI), and Georgia Tech, whose ideas we have appropriated and adapted.
