2015 Sisterhood Dinner Speaker Ruth Dial Woods

The keynote speaker at this year's Sisterhood Dinner will be Dr. Ruth Dial Woods, a distinguished teacher, professor, director of federal programs and consultant with extensive experience in rural economic development. She was the first woman selected to an at-large seat on the UNC Board of Governors. Active in civil and human rights, Dr. Woods self-defines as American Indian, humanist, activist, and feminist. The Hip-Hop Fellow Documentary Screening

The Hip-Hop Fellow is a feature-length documentary following Grammy Award-winning producer 9th Wonder's tenure at Harvard University. Featured interviewees include Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Kendrick Lamar, Young Guru, Dr. Mark Anthony Neal, Phonte and Dr. Marcyliena Morgan. Runtime: 79 minutes. Watch the trailer.

This screening on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in Hunt Library Auditorium is co-presented by NCSU Libraries, the University Scholars Program and OIED's Civil Rights Act Anniversary.

New Student Organization for GLBT Students in STEM

Beginning this semester, NC State will be home to a new student organization. Out in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (oSTEM) seeks to provide a space for GLBT-identified students majoring in STEM fields. The group will act as the NC State chapter of the national professional organization (www.ostem.org), which has more than 50 chapters nationwide.

The national organization works to provide leadership development opportunities, mentorship connections and networking opportunities for students involved with the respective chapters. The national organization also hosts an annual professional conference that offers sessions on topics such as navigating the coming-out process in the workplace and identifying GLBT-friendly employers. In addition, the national conference hosts a job fair and provides students the opportunity to submit resumes for review by participating employers.

The NC State chapter will focus on providing local networking opportunities and professional development opportunities for its members. The first oSTEM meeting will be held on Monday, January 26, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. in Witherspoon Student Center, Room 201 and will include a resume-building workshop with featured guest Beverly Marchi from the Career Development Center. NC State Women's Center and Girls on the Run

The NC State Women’s Center is pleased to announce a new partnership with Girls on the Run, a national non-profit running, health, body image, and wellness program offered to 3rd-5th grade girls. The program is research-based, well-known and respected in the community and aligned with the Women's Center's mission to provide service opportunities to NC State students and outreach to the local community. To promote work-life integration and familial connections with the university, we invite children of NC State faculty, staff and students to participate with us starting in the spring of 2015. Dr. Rosalind Fuse-Hall, president of Bennett College, will give the CHASS Martin Luther King lecture on "The Strength of Diversity" on Thursday, January 29, 2015 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. at McKimmon Center. Reception is from 4:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public.

What is the Sisterhood Dinner?

Tickets Now Available for February 23rd Event

The annual Sisterhood Dinner, sponsored by the Council on the Status of Women, honors the achievements of women and will be held on Monday, February 23, 2015 in the State Ballroom of Talley Student Union. Registration for the dinner has been open for a week and already one-third of the tables have been reserved. The deadline to register is Friday, February 13, 2015 at noon.

The dinner will be preceded by a reception and silent auction to benefit the NC State Women's Center at 5:15 p.m., with dinner service beginning at 6:30 p.m. The theme of this year's dinner is Soar Like an Eagle: Spirit, Vision, Strength. Vox Accalia Women's Choir, directed by Dr. Nathan Leaf, will perform music composed by women.

Dean Solomon Selected for Lifetime Achievement Award

One of the highlights of the annual Sisterhood Dinner is the naming of the recipients of the Equity for Women Awards. (See below for a full description of the awards.) In 2014, the Council on the Status of Women established the Lifetime Achievement Award to honor individuals in the NC State community whose work over the course of their time at NC State has had long-term impact on equity for women and all members of the campus community. Although the award may not be given every year, this year it was quickly determined that the award should be given to Dean Daniel Solomon of the College of Sciences, who will be retiring soon. Dean Solomon has quietly and persistently worked to increase the presence of female students, graduate students, faculty and staff in STEM fields and in academic leadership at NC State. The Council on the Status of Women is pleased to have the opportunity to facilitate recognition of his achievements.

Equity for Women Award Nominations Now Open

The NC State University Council on the Status of Women invites you to nominate NC State faculty, staff and students for the Equity for Women Award. This award is given annually to recognize faculty, staff and students for their outstanding leadership in establishing equity for women at NC State. Nominations are solicited from all members of the campus community, including faculty, staff, students, alumni and partners. This year, we will be giving up to three awards.

Criteria for selection is based on commitment to leadership, service and/or scholarship as well as the impact of the nominee’s efforts. Please note: current members of the Council on the Status of Women are not eligible for the award and should not be nominated. Please check the current roster if you aren't sure who is on the council.

Please nominate worthy candidates for any category by completing the nomination form by 5:00 p.m., Friday, January 30, 2015. Winners will be announced at the 2015 Sisterhood Dinner, Monday, February 23, 2015.

Social Justice January

Conversations about the need for social justice seem to be happening everywhere these days as the daily news highlights issues of inequity, discrimination, harassment and violence, pushing the need for social change to the forefront of our cultural consciousness.

How can we bring our many communities together for a shared discussion? What can we learn from social justice advocates who are doing grassroots work to promote change? What skills do we need to collaborate effectively across communities to work together for change? These are the questions that Social Justice January will attempt to answer.

The OIED Student Centers (Multicultural Student Affairs, the African American Cultural Center, the GLBT Center, and the Women’s Center) are partnering to host two events as part of Social Justice January. The first event, "Identity, Equity and Social Justice: A Conversation for All Communities," will be held on Friday, January 23, 2015 from 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. in Witherspoon Student Center, Room 126 and will be an intergenerational panel discussion featuring social justice advocates representing a diverse range of communities who will talk about efforts to promote greater access, opportunity, equity and inclusion. Panelists will include Mandy Carter, co-founder of the National Black Justice Coalition; Beth Dehghan, founder and president of WomenNC; Ngoc Loan Tran, communications director for the Youth Organizing Institute; and Jorge Luis Ramos, youth council member at El Pueblo, Inc. Everyone is welcome to attend. Refreshments will be provided.

The second event, "Communities and Collaboration: A Social Justice Workshop,” will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. in Witherspoon Student Center, Room 126 and will help students learn how to build community and collaborate with others who share similar interests in working for social justice. The workshop will be facilitated by Mandy Carter, former Executive Director of Southerners on New Ground (SONG) and co-founder of the National Black Justice Coalition. All student leaders are invited to learn strategies for coalition building and working for change. Dinner will be provided. Students should RSVP via email to Renee Wells by January 26, 2015 if they plan to attend.

GLBT Center Lunch and Learn for Faculty

The GLBT Center is partnering with the Office of Faculty Development to offer a Lunch and Learn workshop on “Understanding and Supporting GLBT Students in the Classroom.” The workshop will provide faculty with a brief overview of the services offered by the GLBT Center and how the Center can serve as a resource for faculty. In addition, the presentation will cover some of the main issues that GLBT students face on college campuses, strategies that faculty can use to support GLBT students, and techniques faculty can use to respond to inappropriate comments in the classroom. The workshop will be held on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. in Clark Hall, Room 405. Lunch will be provided. Please register online.
