OIED Announces Diversity Mini-Grant Award Recipients for 2016-17

NC State is committed to creating and improving efforts to make our campus a diverse and inclusive community. To support these efforts, the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity has awarded eleven University Diversity Mini-Grants to faculty and staff for projects related to diversity, inclusion or research that further the academic mission of the university.

Next Women's Center Book Club Selection is Brené Brown Bestseller

The Women's Center Book Club has selected its spring semester title. We will be reading The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You're Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are by Brené Brown. The club will meet every Tuesday beginning on January 24, 2017. Books are provided.

Shailicia Gerald Shines as Student Leader

Shailicia Gerald, who goes by Shai, is a senior in computer engineering from St. Stephens, South Carolina. She is an Air Force ROTC student and served as an orientation leader during the summer to help freshman settle into their new college homes away from home. Women's Center to Offer Drop-In Counseling Hours Beginning January 23

Starting today, the NC State Women's Center will be partnering with the Counseling Center to hold drop-in counseling sessions. A counselor will be in the Women's Center every Monday from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Counselors can act as a safe and confidential resource for survivors. Students who do not identify as survivors can also utilize the counselor's services during this time.

GLBT Faculty and Staff Network Social on January 26

Part of the mission of the GLBT Center is to provide ongoing support for GLBT faculty and staff on campus. To fulfill that mission, the GLBT Center coordinates the GLBT Faculty and Staff Network in order to provide an opportunity for GLBT faculty and staff to connect and form community, to supply informal and formal feedback about campus climate, to support and mentor GLBT students and to connect with prospective GLBT faculty and staff members. The Network holds monthly business meetings and hosts monthly socials. The next GLBT Faculty and Staff Network Social will be on Thursday, January 26, 2017 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Village Draft House. Current and prospective Network members are welcome to attend. Registration for 2017 Sisterhood Dinner Now Open

The Sisterhood Dinner celebrates the contributions and accomplishments of NC State women. This year's theme is "Empowering Women Together." Table registration is $300 for 8 seats. Individual registration is $35 per seat. In addition to entertainment and a keynote speaker, the 2017 Equity for Women Awards will be presented during the dinner (see announcement below to submit a nomination).

Student Government Town Hall: Sexual Assault and Bystander Intervention on January 26

Student Government will be hosting a Town Hall on Thursday, January 26, 2017 to talk about current initiatives, new initiatives and general concerns regarding sexual assault and bystander intervention at NC State. The town hall will be held in the Coastal Ballroom, Talley Student Union from 4:00-5:30 p.m. with free cookies and a gift card raffle.

Supporting Learning Differences in Post-Secondary Environments

The Friday Institute for Educational Innovation will offer a free MOOC (massive open online course) for college-level educators and staff that will initiate a mindset shift wherein professors and other staff more effectively and efficiently gain personal agency to identify, address and implement best practices when supporting the learning of all students in post-secondary environments.

GLBT Center to Offer Trans 101 Workshop on January 31

The GLBT Center will host the first Trans 101 workshop of the spring semester on Tuesday, January 31, 2017 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Trans 101 is a two-hour workshop open to NC State undergraduates, graduate students, staff, faculty and alumni as well as interested members of the local community. The workshop is designed to introduce participants to the spectrum of transgender, gender-nonconforming and gender-questioning identities and expressions. This workshop also addresses common issues faced by transgender students and provides strategies campus community members can use to be trans-inclusive. Registration is encouraged but not required.

NCBI Building Bridges: Leading Diverse Groups Through Conflict Workshop on January 31

NCBI has developed a model for conflict resolution. This model teaches participants skills to handle tough interpersonal and intergroup conflicts. Workshops examine controversial issues through a positive process.  Participants will learn how to reframe controversial issues into a context where all parties are able to work toward a common solution. This workshop is offered on Tuesday, January 31, 2017 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. in Talley 3210.

Leaders for Change to Present "Challenging Anti-Muslim Sentiments" on February 2

Join the Center for Student Leadership, Ethics and Public Service for a panel discussion about the history and current religious climate of Islam on Thursday, February 2, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the Piedmont Ballroom, Talley Student Union. Four panelists will provide an overview of the religion, discuss challenges that have arisen and provide impactful solutions for change.

Diversity Lecture: “Equity vs. Excellence: A False Dichotomy in Science and Society”

Dr. Sylvester Jim Gates, Jr. will give the 2017 College of Humanities and Social Sciences Diversity Lecture on “Equity vs Excellence: A False Dichotomy in Science and Society” on Thursday, February 9, 2017 in Talley Student Union, Room 3285 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. A Distinguished University Professor, University System of Maryland Regents Professor and John S. Toll Professor of Physics at the University of Maryland, Dr. Gates is a theoretical physicist whose American Academy of Arts and Sciences essay led Supreme Court Justice Roberts to ask, “What unique perspective does a minority student bring to a physics class?” during the oral argument in the Fisher v. Texas case in December 2015.

Multicultural Student Affairs to Host Freshman Honors Convocation on February 10

Each year at the beginning of the spring semester, Freshman Honors Convocation recognizes African American, Native American and Hispanic/Latinx first-year students who achieve a 3.0 or higher GPA during their first semester at NC State. NC State is proud to have consistently honored 40% or more of these freshman classes for the last several years. Please join us for this event on Friday, February 10, 2017 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the Piedmont-Mountains Ballroom, Talley Student Union.

GLBT Center to Offer Transportation to Historic Thousands on Jones Street on February 11

The GLBT Center will provide transportation to the Historic Thousands on Jones Street (HKonJ) Moral March to the capitol on Saturday, Feburary 11, 2017. HKonJ is a mass march that has taken place in downtown Raleigh for the past 11 years to bring awareness to the major issues affecting not only North Carolinians, but the entire nation. HKonJ is a great opportunity for your voice to be heard! If you believe that an injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, this is a vital opportunity to work toward a better North Carolina for everyone. Join the GLBT Center as we witness a historic march for voting rights, labor rights, reproductive justice, education equity, police and criminal justice reform and equal protection and recognition under the law.

Tunnel of Oppression Event Seeks Volunteer Actors, Tour Guides and Volunteers

We are currently recruiting actors, tour guides and volunteers to help with this year's Tunnel of Oppression, which will be held Tuesday, March 21, 2017 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. and Wednesday through Thursday, March 22 - 23, 2017 from 3:00-9:00 p.m. in the State Ballroom, Talley Student Union. This is a very big annual event, so we need a lot of help: we are looking for 30 tour guides, 160 volunteers and 180 actors. (No prior acting experience is required!) Upcoming Staff Women's Network Event: Come Make Squish Dishes at the Craft Center

Join us for this fun, 2-hour activity to lean how to craft your own small dishes, suitable for soap, jewelry, or even candles! On Tuesday, March 7 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Craft Center, instructor Jennifer Siegel will show us how to flatten, smoothe, texture and form clay using squish molds. Cost is $5 per person, payable at the Crafts Center the day of the event. Note: The workshop is limited to 8 participants. NC State's First International Festival to be Held on March 31

The International Festival at NC State will be held on Friday March 31, 2017 from 12:00-5:00 p.m. on Stafford Commons. This event will promote cultural competency and expose students, faculty and staff to new perspectives and traditions from different areas around the world. Save the date!

Save the Date: Lavender Graduation to be Held on April 26

The GLBT Center will host its annual Lavender Graduation ceremony on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the Piedmont-Mountains Ballroom, Talley Student Union. Lavender Graduation provides an opportunity to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of 2017 GLBT graduates. All faculty, staff and students are invited to attend. No RSVP is required.
