Dick Gregory to Headline NC State's Martin Luther King, Jr. Campus Commemoration on Monday, January 13, 2014

The Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity and the African American Cultural Center will bring Dick Gregory to NC State for the 2014 MLK Campus Commemoration on Monday, January 13, 2014 from 6:00PM-8:00PM at McKimmon Center. This campus celebration is free and open to the public. The entire NC State campus community is invited to attend.

Dick Gregory was on the front line in the sixties during the Civil Rights Era. Today he continues to be a "drum major for justice and equality."

Born in 1932 in St. Louis, Gregory is an African American comedian and civil rights activist whose social satire changed the way white Americans perceived African American comedians. By 1962, Gregory had become a nationally known headline performer, selling out nightclubs, making numerous national television appearances, and recording popular comedy albums.

From an early age, Gregory demonstrated a strong sense of social justice. While a student at Sumner High School in St. Louis, he led a march protesting segregated schools. Later, inspired by the work of leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and organizations such as the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Gregory took part in the Civil Rights Movement and used his celebrity status to draw attention to such issues as segregation and disfranchisement. In 1992, he began a program called "Campaign for Human Dignity" to fight crime in St. Louis neighborhoods.

We hope to see you next Monday evening at this special celebration!
