African American Cultural Center's Living Legends Series Will Feature C.T. Vivian

This year's Living Legends Series brings the Rev. Dr. C.T. Vivian to NC State on Monday, October 28, 2013 at 6:00PM in the African American Cultural Center in Witherspoon, Room 126.

Please join us for this opportunity to hear C.T. Vivian, minister, author, and friend of Martin Luther King, Jr. during the American Civil Rights Movement.

C.T. Vivian is the founder of the C.T. Vivian Leadership Institute, Inc. (CTVLI), an Atlanta-based non-profit organization dedicated to the development and sustainability of communities.

Dr. Vivian is also the founder of BASIC Diversity, Inc. (BASIC), a diversity consultancy that helps organizations leverage the benefits and minimize the challenges created by a diverse workforce by creating environments where people can effectively collaborate across cultural differences. BASIC is best known for its Race Awareness Workshop, which has been evaluated as the most effective race relations program in America and has been offered numerous times at NC State.

Dr. Vivian was featured throughout PBS’s acclaimed documentary Eyes On The Prize (1987 & 2006). PBS later produced a full-length presentation, The Healing Ministry of the Rev. Dr. C.T. Vivian.  He is also featured as both an activist and analyst in the series, The People’s Century (PBS/WGBH, 1998), and in the Tom Brokaw documentary King (History Channel, 2008).

The Chancellor's First Year Student Leadership Program (CFYSLP) will begin accepting nominations for 2014 beginning on October 21, 2013. Student participants are required to be in their first year at NC State. Transfer students are also welcome to apply. Students from historically underrepresented groups, from rural areas and with a declared major in science, technology, engineering, and mathematical fields are particularly encouraged to apply. However, all student majors are welcome to apply. The Program seeks to identify and nurture a cohort of emerging leaders. The primary objective is to build a cadre of student leaders who are civic-minded, intellectually able, and professionally skilled, and who will become the community, business, and national leaders of the future. There will be two informational sessions: Monday, October 21, 2013 from 6:30PM to 7:30PM and Thursday, October 24, 2013 from 4:30PM to 5:30PM, both in Harrelson Hall, Room 330.

The annual NC State Human Rights Day Observance for 2013 will be held on Monday, December 2 at 9:00AM in Room 356 of the African American Cultural Center. Although International Human Rights Day is observed every year on December 10, since that is typically during final exams, NC State chooses another day on which to commemorate the event.

At this year's program, Chancellor Randy Woodson will carry out the traditional declaration signing and will also recognize staff who volunteer in service that supports human rights. This is the second year in the series of events that spotlight members of the NC State community who commit their personal time to support human rights. Last year's event included a spotlight on students. Future years will spotlight faculty and alumni.
