Alternative Service Break: Out of the Classroom

On a misty Thursday morning, a group of eight other students and I began a life changing experience known formally as an Alternative Service Break (ASB) trip. On this trip, we were accompanied by Director of Multicultural Student Affairs, Rod Bradley, and Assistant Director of Programs for the Women's Center, Jennifer Castillo. The trip began on Thursday, October 10th and concluded on Sunday the 13th. After our initial departure from NC State, we traveled to the city of Greensboro, where we visited the captivating International Civil Rights Museum. At the museum, we were guided through several exhibits consisting of historical depictions of civil rights-era America; the actual counter of the famous Greensboro sit-in was part of the exhibit.



Next, we made our way down to the lively city of Atlanta, Georgia, where we participated in a number of service activities, including: helping to deliver prepared meals to elderly community members, being part of a local Festival of Lights parade, and volunteering at a playhouse for children with Down's Syndrome. Throughout the trip we were able to visit a plethora of local places, such as the Georgia Institute of Technology and the famous Mary Mac's restaurant, to name a few. At the close of our journey Sunday morning, we attended Ebenezer Baptist Church, the church where Martin Luther King, Jr. and his father, Martin Luther King, Sr., pastored. The experience was a fulfilling one, and allowed me to grow more, not just as a student, but as a person.

ECD 222: Spring 2014 Peer Educator Training Course

Looking for a class to take this Spring? Check out ECD 222. This interactive 3-credit course trains students to become leaders in educating their peers about the issues of sexual and relationship violence and stalking. Upon completing the course you can apply to be a peer educator with The Movement and get paid to facilitate workshops and organize programs across campus. This conference, to be held Friday, November 22, 2013, 8:30AM- 4:30 PM at UNC-Chapel Hill, William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education, will allow participants to hear and share ideas with colleagues about critical challenges that diversity practitioners may face in building inclusive communities in difficult political and legal climates. The conference keynote speaker will be Susan Sturm, George M. Jaffin Professor of Law and Social Responsibility, Columbia Law School. Afternoon sessions will include Rachel Glickman, Team Leader and Co-Presenter from the Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights, who will discuss Title IX, Section 504/ADA, and Emerging Trends in Compliance; and William Crews, Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs for North Carolina. Child Welfare & Powerhouse Road: An Evening with Ronald D. Maloney

Ronald Maloney is a 1977 NC State Social Work graduate who has a Masters in Social Work and is now a medical social worker in California. He was born a mixed-race child in Morganton, NC, in the 1950's.  When it came time to go to school, no school would accept him. So, DSS in western NC took him, and he grew up in the "colored" orphanage in Oxford. This event, on the evening of October 30, 2013 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM, in the Hunt Library IEI Multipurpose Room C&D, is being hosted by the SW 290 BSW class. It is free, but please register.

Call for Posters: Perspectives on Diversity, Cultural Competence, and International Education

The College of Education and the Office of International and Distance Education Alliance (I+DEA) are pleased to announce that the first Poster Symposium on “Perspectives on Diversity, Cultural Competence, and International Education” will be held in the Wachovia Room at the Friday Institute during Education Week on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 from 4:00PM - 8:00PM.

This poster symposium will showcase the quality and diversity of the undergraduate and graduate-level international related research at NC State. The posters could be practice or research-based. As an excellent opportunity for students to expand their experience, this research presentation is a beneficial addition to a resume for potential employers or graduate studies.

This event is open to all and abstracts for poster submission are due on November 6, 2013. See the guidelines for details.
