Director of Minority Engineering Programs in the College of Engineering: Angelitha Daniel

Angelitha Daniel is one of NC State's college-level diversity directors. Each of the colleges has at least one director or assistant dean for diversity. GLBT Center to Host Two Workshops on Microaggressions on October 31

As part of the lineup of workshops for the 2016-2017 GLBT Advocate Program, the GLBT Center will host two “Recognizing and Responding to Microaggressions” workshops on Monday, October 31, 2016. The first workshop will be from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. in Talley Student Union, Room 3222 and the second workshop will be from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. in Talley Student Union, Room 3285. This three-hour workshop is open to NC State undergraduates, graduate students, staff, faculty and alumni as well as interested members of the local community. The workshop helps participants learn how to identify microaggressions, understand their impact and respond appropriately when they occur. Also, check out the recent article on NC State News.

November is Native American Heritage Month

Multicultural Student Affairs is proud to present a calendar of events for Native American Heritage Month, beginning November 1, 2016. Events include lectures, discussions and workshops ranging from exploring issues surrounding the Dakota Access Pipeline to celebrating and learning about the Indigenous tribes of North Carolina. Featured programs include "Be Who You Be: Notes on Culture, Politics and the Rise of the Indigenous Hip Hop Generation" on November 1, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. in Talley 4101. The speaker is Dr. Kyle Mays, historian of modern U.S., Afro-Indigenous and Indigenous studies. In addition, the signature event, "Culture Night" will take place on November 14, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. in the Coastal Ballroom, Talley Student Union. The theme of this event is "Seven Generations," which refers to the traditional principle of revering, respecting and protecting the three generations before you and teaching and raising the three generations after you. This event is centered around hearing cultural perspectives from each of the seven generations through storytelling, dance, drumming and other Indigenous practices. We hope to see you at these events!

Applications Now Being Accepted for 2016-17 OIED Faculty Diversity Liaisons

We invite interested faculty to apply for the 2016-17 OIED Faculty Diversity Liaison Program. Faculty liaisons serve as an important resource in OIED’s efforts to foster an inclusive and welcoming campus climate, enhance the university’s ability to recruit and retain diverse faculty, staff and students and support ongoing university efforts to increase the cultural competence of NC State students. To apply to serve as a 2016-17 faculty diversity liaison, please send a one-page proposal describing one or more initiatives and the mix of activities that you would like to pursue as an OIED faculty diversity liaison to Marcia Gumpertz. Faculty who participate in the program must have the support of their academic department head to participate.

November is International Education Month, a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education. The initiative is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. International Affairs celebrates all month long by hosting a variety of events across campus for students, employees and the community.

Showcase of Women Faculty’s Research, Creativity and Scholarship on November 1

The Association of Women Faculty invites you to participate in a showcase of NC State Women Faculty’s Research, Creativity and Scholarship. The event will be held on November 1, 2016 in the Brooks Hall Galleries and consist of a poster session and networking reception. Paper posters, electronic posters, videos and other types of displays are invited. All faculty are welcome to attend and/or exhibit posters prepared for recent conferences. This is an opportunity to network with other women faculty, learn what their research is about and make connections for future collaborations. Come (and register) even if you don't wish to present a poster. Those who cannot attend but wish to be added to the database should also register.

Second Annual Global Storytelling Competition in Stewart Theatre on November 2

Join us Wednesday, November 2 for the second annual Global Storytelling Competition in Stewart Theatre at Talley Student Union. Nine talented and very worldly NC State students will share their global stories in a timed, two-minute presentation. Don't forget to bring your phones or tablets – live voting will take place immediately following the student presentations and winners will be announced on the spot. This event is free and open to the public. Registration or tickets are not required.

Upcoming Cross-Cultural Training Session for Faculty and Staff on November 4

Faculty and staff are invited to register for workshops aimed at working professionals who wish to build upon their global competencies: 1) Foundations for Global Success: Best Practices for Working Across Cultures on November 4, 2016 from 12:00-1:30 p.m. (coffee and snacks provided) 2) Developing Cultural Acumen on December 2, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Participants will receive a custom, individualized assessment as well as a one-year subscription to Berlitz's Cultural Navigator as part of their registration fee (a $99 value).

Be a Practice Interviewer at Third Annual "Prepare the Pack" Event on November 29

Prepare the Pack is a mock-interview day that will provide 20 second-year master’s students with the chance to practice their interviewing skills as they prepare to (re)enter the professional world. During this event, students will have 3 interview sessions based on general but realistic entry-level job descriptions. Each interview will conclude with the interviewers providing written and oral feedback to each student as well as a resume critique. Prior to the interviews, we will host a reception where students can practice their skills of networking with you, acting as potential employers. Prepare the Pack has proved to be a valuable and enjoyable experience for both students and volunteers! We hope you will consider serving as an interviewer for a functional area in which you have experience. Please volunteer by Monday, November 7, 2016.
