NCBI Powers Dialogue and Change with Fourteen New Faces

NC State hosted the 16th Annual Carolina Coalition earlier this month, bringing trainers from regional and national universities to prepare them to facilitate the international model of diversity training developed by the National Coalition Building Insititute (NCBI). Native American Heritage Month: K-12 Educators Understanding Native American Culture

The College of Education invites you to join us for the program “K-12 Educators Understanding Native American Culture.” This program will discuss the difference between cultural appropriations versus cultural appreciation and the role it plays within Native American culture. Pre-service teachers will learn the importance of understanding and respecting Native American culture as well as learn about the educational needs of K-12 students of Native American descent.

Developing Cultural Acumen Workshop Offered by Global Training Initiative

The Global Training Initiative invites you to attend a workshop on December 2, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on "Developing Cultural Acumen." This training is intended for professionals who want to examine their own cultural preferences and learn to apply a systematic approach to navigating cultural differences. Participants will receive a custom, individualized assessment as well as a one-year subscription to Berlitz's Cultural Navigator as part of their registration fee (a $99 value). The Tunnel of Oppression Needs YOU!

We are currently recruiting actors, tour guides and volunteers to help with this year's Tunnel of Oppression, which will be held Tuesday, March 21, 2017 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. and Wednesday through Thursday, March 22 - 23, 2017 from 3:00-9:00 p.m. in the State Ballroom, Talley Student Union. This is a very big annual event, so we need a lot of help: we are looking for 30 tour guides, 160 volunteers and 180 actors. (No prior acting experience is required!) The Staff Senate is collecting non-perishable food and household items for the Feed the Pack food pantry and gently used fall and winter coats for the Warm the Pack coat drive through December 5, 2016. Donations are needed more than ever this year due to Hurricane Matthew. Please donate!

Applications Now Being Accepted for 2016-17 OIED Faculty Diversity Liaisons

We invite interested faculty to apply for the 2016-17 OIED Faculty Diversity Liaison Program. Faculty liaisons serve as an important resource in OIED’s efforts to foster an inclusive and welcoming campus climate, enhance the university’s ability to recruit and retain diverse faculty, staff and students and support ongoing university efforts to increase the cultural competence of NC State students. To apply to serve as a 2016-17 faculty diversity liaison, please send a one-page proposal describing one or more initiatives and the mix of activities that you would like to pursue as an OIED faculty diversity liaison to Marcia Gumpertz. Faculty who participate in the program must have the support of their academic department head to participate.

NC State to Offer Staff Ombuds Services Beginning on January 1, 2017

A Staff Senate resolution has resulted in the launch of a year-long pilot Staff Ombuds Program, which will commence on January 1, 2017.  An ombuds is a neutral, confidential, third party resource for employees who directs them to available options to resolve workplace conflict.
