February is Black History Month. NC State is ready to celebrate and commemorate with a calendar of nearly two dozen programs for you to choose from all month long! Events include films, exhibits, interactive programs, presentations, art, dance, history, poetry, activism, social issues, beauty, science, quiz competitions and much more. #ThinkAndDo: The Flint Water Crisis

The greatest thing about equity and social justice work is that there is room for contribution from people of all walks of life and within any area of expertise. At NC State, as we think and do, we should constantly challenge ourselves to think of and do for others. As NC State cultivates the next generation of thought leaders and activists, how can we be good global citizens, using our respective skills to support those most in need?

Erin Morant Joins OIED's Oureach & Education Unit

The Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity's Outreach and Education unit welcomes Erin Morant as its new program coordinator. Erin will coordinate OIED's diversity and equity training offerings, including open enrollment workshops, the Equal Opportunity Institute and National Coalition Building Institute workshops.

Tonight: "Beyond the Veil" Educational Program

Please join the Muslim Students Association and the Women's Center for "Beyond the Veil," a program in which you will learn about the Muslim faith and the Hijab, a veil that covers the head and chest, which is particularly worn by some Muslim women. Now more than ever, it is important to learn about other faiths and cultures so that everyone can be treated with respect and understanding. The program will be held on February 1, 2016 in Park Shops, Room 200 from 7:00-8:00 p.m.

Get Ready for NC State TUFFtalks on February 6!

In an effort to put a spotlight on NC State University’s best examples of “Think and Do,” the Union Activities Board (UAB) will host TUFFtalks on February 6, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. in Talley Student Union. This event will allow students, alumni and university employees alike to showcase their method of “Think and Do.” Through speeches, speakers will educate attendees on a plethora of topics ranging from education to finance in an effort to further elaborate on how we can promote collaboration and forward-thinking to improve the world.

Global Training Initiative Offers Cultural Conversations

GTI's "Cultural Convesations" are free workshops that are peer-led opportunities to explore cultural differences through small-group discussions with SKEMA business school students as well as other international populations. Participation is recorded for those receiving extra credit or programming credit.

Two Final Tournées Films Highlight Black History Month

The Tournées Film Festival is free and open to the public. The two final films will be shown at the Campus Cinema at Witherspoon Student Center:

February 4: Timbuktu, introduction by Dr. Anna Bigelow, associate professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies, College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

February 11: Bande de filles/Girlhood, introduction by Dr. Mamyrah Prosper, postdoctoral teaching scholar in International Studies, College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Sisterhood Dinner Registration Closing on February 15

This year’s Sisterhood Dinner theme is LEAP, in recognition of the leap year date, with LEAP standing for Lead, Empower, Act, Prevail. Recipients of the 2016 Equity for Women Awards will also be announced. Dinner registration will close on February 15, 2016.

Multicultural Student Affairs Seeking Students to Serve as Peer Mentors and Symposium Counselors in 2016-17

MSA seeks bright, energetic, civic-minded individuals to serve as student mentors for the 2016-2017 Peer Mentor Program. The goal of the Peer Mentor Program is to aid in the academic, emotional and socio-cultural adjustment of culturally diverse first-year students (mentees) at NC State. Mentors serve as peer support personnel and share program goals and responsibilities aimed at ensuring the retention of student participants. This volunteer position involves a one-year commitment.

Symposium Counselors serve as facilitators for the three-day Symposium program, which welcomes multicultural first-year and transfer students to campus in August. Symposium Counselors help coordinate and facilitate program sessions, serve as resources for student participants and generally assist with all aspects of the program. Symposium Counselors will also serve as mentors within the Peer Mentor Program. This paid position involves spring training but is primarily focused during the second week of August.

"Diversity Education Week: Revisited" to Be Held

"Diversity Education Week: Revisited" will be held during the spring semester with Initiative-driven programming that reinforces the “Do” of NC State’s “Think and Do” motto. With the goal of attaining an inclusive campus for all students that moves beyond simple tolerance toward embracing and celebrating the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual, registered student organizations, university offices, departments and colleges are invited to host programs and events that will take place Monday, March 14 through Friday, March 18, 2016.
