2017 Sisterhood Dinner – A Few Seats Still Available

The Sisterhood Dinner celebrates the contributions and accomplishments of NC State women. This year's theme is "Empowering Women Together." Table registration is $300 for 8 seats. Individual registration is $35 per seat. In addition to entertainment and a keynote speaker, the 2017 Equity for Women Awards will be presented during the dinner.

Poole College of Management to Offer Free Income Tax Assistance

NC State University Poole College of Management is hosting free income tax preparation assistance sessions for the 2017 income tax return season. The service is offered through the IRS-certified Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Poole College student volunteers in the college’s bachelor of accounting degree program completed a training session and will be providing assistance on four Saturdays during this tax season, with faculty supervision. The help sessions will be held in Nelson Hall room B400 from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on the following Saturdays: February 11, February 25, March 18 and April 8. This VITA site will not be able to prepare 1040NR returns and there is an income limit of $64,000 for free filing.

GLBT Center to Host Microaggressions Workshop on February 13

As part of the lineup of workshops for the 2016-2017 GLBT Advocate Program, the GLBT Center will host a “Recognizing and Responding to Microaggressions” workshop on Monday, February 13, 2017 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. in Talley Student Union, Room 3222. This three-hour workshop is open to NC State undergraduates, graduate students, staff, faculty and alumni as well as interested members of the local community. The workshop will help participants learn how to identify microaggressions, understand their impact, and respond appropriately when they occur.

"Finding Your Voice" to Show How to Transition from Political Onlookers to Participants

All students are invited to learn about current key political issues facing residents of North Carolina, especially those that adversely impact specific groups statewide, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. on Monday, February 13, 2017 in the Talley Student Union Ballroom. Learn how to transition from a passive onlooker into an active participant in local government. We will discuss topics such as HB2, gerrymandering and voter suppression. Professor of political science Mark Nance will educate attendees. The event is organized by Minority Engineering Programs.

Staff Senate Diversity Committee to Hold Social with Dancing and Demos on February 16

The NC State community is invited to join the Staff Senate Diversity Committee on Thursday, February 16, 2017 from 5:00-8:00 pm. in Witherspoon 126 for "Dancing Around the World," a social dance featuring heavy hors d'oevres, instructions, demonstrations and open dancing. GLBT Faculty and Staff Network Social to be Held on February 16

The GLBT Center coordinates the GLBT Faculty and Staff Network to provide an opportunity for GLBT faculty and staff to connect and form community, to supply informal and formal feedback about campus climate, to support and mentor GLBT students and to connect with prospective GLBT faculty and staff members. The Network holds monthly business meetings and hosts monthly socials. The next GLBT Faculty and Staff Network Social will be on Thursday, February 16, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Gonza Tacos y Tequila. Current and prospective Network members are welcome to attend. Upcoming Professors' Communities: Celebrating Failures and Timing to Full Professor

Advanced faculty share their failures, rejections and stories of overcoming challenges early and later in their careers to help better contextualize some of the difficulties assistant professors will inevitably experience. This is part of the Assistant Professors' Community series, but all are welcome.

Are there gender and race patterns and differences among disciplines in time to promotion from associate to full professor? Marcia Gumpertz, assistant vice provost for faculty diversity, will present an analysis of faculty retention and promotion data from four land grant institutions, including NC State. This is part of the Associate Professors' Community series, but all are welcome.

Diversity and Inclusion Adventure Experience (DIVE) Outdoor Adventure on February 19

D.I.V.E. will have its first outdoor adventure of the semester on Sunday, February 19, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. at Hanging Rock State Park. Join us for hiking, sightseeing and community building! Transporation can be provided. Dues of $5 will be collected for this trip.

GLBT Center's Project SAFE Workshop Returns on February 21, Open to All

The GLBT Center will host a Project SAFE workshop on February 21, 2017. Project SAFE is a three-hour workshop open to NC State students, staff, faculty and alumni as well as interested members of the local community. The workshop addresses a wide range of information, including identity terms associated with the GLBT community, issues that GLBT students often deal with during the coming-out process, concerns that GLBT students face both in and out of the classroom, ways that allies can create inclusive environments and the on- and off-campus resources available to students.

Peer Mentor Program Accepting Student Mentor Applications Through March 1

The Peer Mentor Program aims to create a supportive network for culturally diverse incoming first-year students. The program pairs incoming students with upperclassmen, who serve as mentors throughout the incoming student’s first year. Mentors maintain relationships with their mentees and help ensure their growth and success. The program also works to connect first-year students to campus resources, student organizations and events that match the interests of each individual student.

African American Cultural Center Sponsoring Bus Trip to National Museum

The African American Cultural Center is sponsoring a bus trip to Washington, D.C. to tour the newly opened National Museum of African American History and Culture on Sunday, March 5, 2017. The trip includes a round trip bus ticket to Washington, D.C., a timed-entry pass to the museum and lunch at no cost to students. We are pleased to invite students who participate, for a minimum of 3 hours, as a character representative or support staff in the Blacks in Wax Live Museum. If there are available seats following this event, we will open up the process to fill additional seats.

NC State's First International Festival to be Held on March 31

The International Festival at NC State will be held on Friday March 31, 2017 from 12:00-4:00 p.m. on Stafford Commons. This event will promote cultural competency and expose students, faculty and staff to new perspectives and traditions from different areas around the world. There will be cultural performances throughout the event, including various forms of creative and artistic expression such as music, dance and poetry. GLBT Center's Lavender Graduation to be Held on April 26

The GLBT Center will host its annual Lavender Graduation ceremony on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the Piedmont-Mountains Ballroom, Talley Student Union. Lavender Graduation provides an opportunity to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of 2017 GLBT graduates. All faculty, staff and students are invited to attend. No RSVP is required.
