GLBT Center Hosts Third Annual GLBT Symposium

On Saturday, August 13, 2016, 138 students participated in the third annual GLBT Symposium. This half-day event is held each fall during move-in weekend as a way for incoming GLBT students to connect with each other, form community, learn about the services and resources offered by the GLBT Center and find out how they can get involved on campus.

New Senior Director of Campus Community Centers Brings Vision and Cohesion to OIED

Reggie Barnes is NC State’s new senior director over four campus community centers: the African American Cultural Center, GLBT Center, Multicultural Student Affairs and the Women's Center. Barnes will also convene the university's bias incident response team.

African American Cultural Center Community Book Club Begins Next Week

The NC State University African American Cultural Center (AACC) is celebrating 25 years of serving the campus and community. Honoring the mission of the center, the anniversary theme is Examining Wellness in African American Spaces: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. This semester, the AACC is partnering with several departments to discuss segments of the theme.

With partnership in mind, the AACC, the Women’s Center and Multicultural Student Affairs invite you to participate in our community book club discussion on Mondays from August 22 through October 3, 2016. We are reading Too Heavy A Yoke - Black Women and the Burden of Strength by Dr. Chanequa Walker-Barnes. Each Monday at noon, we will gather for a facilitated discussion (one chapter per week). We will meet at the African American Cultural Center and the Women’s Center on alternating weeks.

Connect with the GLBT Faculty and Staff Network

Part of the mission of the GLBT Center is to provide ongoing support for GLBT faculty and staff on campus. To fulfill that mission, the GLBT Center coordinates the GLBT Faculty and Staff Network to provide an opportunity for GLBT faculty and staff to connect and form community, to supply informal and formal feedback about campus climate, to support and mentor GLBT students and to connect with prospective GLBT faculty and staff members.

The Network holds monthly business meetings and gets together for monthly socials. All new and returning GLBT faculty and staff are invited to join. The first meeting of the fall semester will be held on Monday, August 22, 2016 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. in Talley Student Union, Room 3285. Student Government to Hold Town Hall Discussions for Students and Administrators

Student Government will hold the first of a series of town hall discussions on August 25, 2016 in the Senate Chambers in Talley Student Union, Room 4140 at 2:00 p.m. The purpose of the town halls is to give students an avenue to express their concerns to departmental administrators and faculty and create long-term solutions.

Each monthly town hall will focus on a different topic. Concerns will be addressed at the town hall that most closely relates to each suggestion or comment. There will be raffle prize giveaways at the town halls!

NCBI Workshops Announced; NC State NCBI Team Also Seeks New Members

The National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) is a non-profit leadership training organization founded in 1984 to eliminate prejudice and conflict in communities throughout the world. The NCBI team at NC State offers free interactive, experiential, and high-energy workshops throughout the year to the campus community.

Upcoming offerings include the Building Bridges: Strengthening Leadership for Diverse Communities workshop, offered twice this fall, on Friday, September 16, 2016 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Friday, November 18, 2016. Register online.

Diversity Mini-Grant Program Now Accepting Proposals

All full-time, part-time and temporary university employees, faculty and staff are eligible to apply for a Diversity Mini-Grant. Proposals must meet the mini-grant program guidelines and will be selected by a committee appointed by the vice provost. All eligible proposals must be submitted online by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 7, 2016.  The maximum proposal request is $3,000.00. Announcement of grant recipients will be made by November 2016.

The University Diversity Mini-Grant serves as a seed grant to enhance or build an initiative. Previously funded proposals may reapply. However, proposals will only be funded for a maximum of two (2) years.
