Who Will Be the Digest's 1,000th Subscriber?

Since its formation in 2011, the NC State Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity (OIED) has published the Diversity Digest, which you are now reading. Thanks to your referrals and word-of-mouth, our subscriber base has grown steadily over the past three years. The Digest is on track to reach over 1,000 subscribers some time during the 2014-15 academic year. To mark this milestone, the Digest will feature the 1,000th subscriber in an issue later this year. The lucky winner, along with the person who referred him/her, will receive a gift from OIED.

The Digest brings you diversity-related news, events, and information pertaining to Diversity and Inclusion, Equal Opportunity and Equity, the African American Cultural Center, the GLBT Center, Multicultural Student Affairs, and the Women's Center weekly throughout the academic year and monthly during summer. Chocolate Festival This Friday at Carmichael Gym

The Women’s Center will host its 11th annual Chocolate Festival on September 19, 2014 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Carmichael Gymnasium Basketball Courts. The Chocolate Festival is an annual event that combines breast cancer awareness and wellness with chocolate sampling and a silent auction. The event will feature a musical DJ, a balloon arch, and “chains of love,” where participants can send affirmations and hopeful messages to breast cancer survivors and their loved ones. The Chocolate Festival website provides more information about the event for attendees, vendors and volunteers. Advance tickets can be purchased online prior to the event. If not already sold out, remaining tickets will also be sold at the door.

Assistant Professors' Community Meeting

This month's Assistant Professor's meeting topic is "Writing and Accountability Groups," on Thursday, September 18, 2014 12:25-1:15 p.m., 1911 Building, Room 129. Joy Gaston Gayles, Associate Professor, Leadership, Policy and Adult and Higher Education, and Kate Annett-Hitchcock, Assistant Professor, Textile and Apparel, Technology and Management, will talk about their experiences with writing and accountability groups, the benefits for faculty of participating in a group, how the different types of groups work and how to join or form a writing or accountability group. Associate Professors' Community Meeting

This month's Associate Professors' Community Meeting topic is "Finding New Research Directions - When? How?" on Monday, September 22, 2014 12:25-1:15 p.m., 211D Park Shops. Senior faculty will discuss cases where faculty have successfully changed research directions, either to take advantage of changes in research funding priorities, to make use of new tools as a result of new collaborations or to follow new interests. The panelists are Rebecca Boston, William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor, Plant Molecular and Developmental Biology; Carol Hall, Assistant Director, NC Agricultural Research Service; Camille Dreyfus, Distinguished University Professor, Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering; and George Kennedy, William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor, Department of Entomology. Chancellor's First Year Student Leadership Program to Hold Informational Sessions

The Chancellor's First Year Student Leadership Program seeks to identify and nurture a cohort of emerging leaders who are civic-minded, intellectually able and professionally skilled, and who will become the community, business, and national leaders of the future. NC State Conference on Leadership and Diversity

Registration is now open for the 2nd NC State Conference on Leadership and Diversity to be held on Thursday, October 9, 8:15 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at Riddick Hall. The conference will feature a workshop facilitated by Mr. Oscar Santos of BB&T University, as well as break-out programs designed to increase effectiveness of managers and team members within NC State’s diverse workforce. Dr. Derald Wing Sue to Be Part of Diversity Ed Week

Dr. Derald Wing Sue, Professor of Psychology at Teachers College, Columbia University, will be visiting NC State on Wednesday, Oct 22, 2014 from 10:30-11:45 a.m., Hunt Library Auditorium. Dr. Sue is renowned for his presentations on the topic of microaggressions. The American Psychological Association describes him this way: "His deep interest and passion led him to becoming one of the most prominent voices in cross cultural studies. With over 150 publications under his belt, he is the most cited Multicultural Scholar today." We encourage you to personally attend and to promote this event to administrators, faculty, staff and students in your unit. This event is sponsored by the Office of International Affairs, the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity, and the Office of the Provost. Please register online. Television Star Laverne Cox to Speak at NC State

Laverne Cox, critically acclaimed actress who currently appears in the Netflix original series Orange is the New Black, will visit NC State on November 11, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in the Talley Student Union Ballroom. Playing the groundbreaking role of "Sophia Burset," an incarcerated African American transgender woman on the hit show, Cox is the first trans woman of color to have a leading role on a mainstream scripted television show. Time Magazine named Sophia Burset the 4th most influential fictional character of 2013.
