The African American Cultural Center Welcomes Stacy Utley

Gallery Opening and Lunch and Learn to Feature Artist

Please join the African American Cultural Center in the second floor Art Gallery of Witherspoon Student Center on Monday, October 6, 2014 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. for its next gallery opening. The new exhibit is a series of works by artist J. Stacy Utley.

There will also be a Lunch and Learn event with the artist on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. in the Washington Sankofa Room of Witherspoon Student Center.

J. Stacy Utley is an emerging artist whose current series of works, Any City, AMERICA is a "compelling look into gentrification through the placement of portable objects within an urban setting. The portable objects – miniature houses – are ambiguous yet familiar in form that serves as an architectural prototype. His placement and juxtaposition of the object in the context of apparent urban renewal provides an uncanny co-existence of old and new, certainty and uncertainty, past, present, or the unknown. His work is a direct correlation to his study and training of both art and architecture." (From the artist’s website.)

Utley earned an M.F.A. in Visual Arts from Lesley University, College of Art and Design (formerly the Art Institute of Boston) in Boston, MA. He has also earned a B.A. in Architecture and B.A. in Environmental Design from the College of Design at NC State. He has mentored under artists such as Juan Logan, Roxana Perez-Mendez and Susan Harbage-Page, as well as architect Phil Freelon, FAIA. His practice currently resides in Charlotte, North Carolina.
