Faculty Diversity is an area within the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity led by Assistant Vice Provost Marcia Gumpertz that spearheads several major initiatives for NC State faculty:

Programs and Events

Faculty Diversity hosts programs and events throughout the year, including Leadership Development Workshops, Climate Workshops for Department Heads, and other gatherings. Please mark your calendars for this upcoming event:

Monday, November 4, 2013, 1:00-2:00 pm, College of Textiles, Room 3438: Webinar: "Retaining Women in STEM Fields"

Women are now well-represented in science Ph.D. programs and (in some fields) in junior faculty ranks. But many departments lose women and end up without much diversity on their faculties. Inside Higher Ed presents this webinar, featuring Joan C. Williams, distinguished professor of law and the founding director of the Center for WorkLife Law at the University of California Hastings College of Law. This webinar will explore why women leave and what departments, colleges and universities can do about it.

Multicultural Faculty Group

The focus of the Multicultural Faculty Group (MFG) is on recruiting and retaining high quality multicultural faculty. The group organizes networking opportunities for faculty, including two networking coffee hours for junior faculty each semester, occasional no-host lunch gatherings at restaurants adjacent to campus, and an annual reception. This group was formed by a small multicultural group of assistant professors at NC State in 2009 who were interested in social networking opportunities. Building Future Faculty Program

The NC State Building Future Faculty (BFF) Program is a two-day, all-expenses-paid workshop held each spring for doctoral students and post-doctoral scholars from institutions across the country interested in pursuing academic careers; who are committed to promoting diversity in higher education; and who are one to two years away from beginning a job search. During the workshop, participants attend sessions describing life as a faculty member at a research extensive university, expectations of new faculty, and resources available to faculty for help with research and teaching. Participants are each matched with an academic department whose interests closely match their own. The BFF program encourages graduate students and postdoctoral scholars from groups that are underrepresented in their disciplines to apply. The program aims to increase representation of diverse U.S. graduate students and postdoctoral scholars joining the professoriate. Please note:

Associate Professors' Community

New this semester, the Associate Professors' Community is an informal discussion group open to all faculty, with a special emphasis on issues of importance to associate professors. The learning community discusses topics related to setting direction, taking on new roles, teaching, research, and faculty life. The intent is to enhance faculty experience and provide an ongoing discussion group for associate professors. The meeting topics are suggested by participants and members of the Advisory Board. Each meeting focuses on a different aspect of faculty experience and helps make connections with people in many different spheres of the university. The upcoming meeting will feature panelists discussing the following topic:

Assistant Professors' Community

The Assistant Professors' Community is an informal discussion group open to all faculty, with a special emphasis on issues of importance to assistant professors. The group was launched during the 2006-07 academic year. The upcoming meeting will feature panelists discussing the following topic:
