Diversity Education Week

In its 5th year, NC State’s Annual Diversity Education Week is a joint initiative of the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity and the UAB-Diversity Activities Board.  Started by students in the spring of 2011, Diversity Education Week serves to promote awareness and understanding of our nation and world’s diverse cultures and foster intercultural understanding through a collection of engaging opportunities including lectures, workshops, panel and group discussions, information sessions, film, food, music, dance and more.  To further equip NC State graduates with 21st century skills, Diversity Education Week advances learning and scholarship, builds understanding and respect among different peoples, and enhances constructive leadership and dialogue in our local and global community.

Registered student organizations, University offices, departments, and colleges are invited to host programs and events during the 5th Annual Diversity Education Week taking place Sunday, October 19- Saturday, October 25, 2014.

Language Variation: The Forgotten Dimension of Diversity

Time: 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Location: Withers Conference Room 331

Although the enhancement of social and ethnic diversity has become an increasing priority on most university campuses, there is a noticeable absence of systematic attention to linguistic diversity within the university system. Attitudes and behavior towards language diversity commonly affect faculty staff, and student behavior related to the university, participation and performance in university life, and about the role students have in university life. This workshop addresses this issue on campus through a comprehensive educational model, including: 1) production of a 6 minute language diversity documentary 2) language diversity presentations and discussions, and 3) the establishment of on-line resource and the personnel to support language diversity efforts.
