Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine has included NC State in its minority STEM graduates rankings for the new academic year. The rankings for “Top Producers of Minority STEM Graduates” list NC State at 24th for bachelor’s degrees conferred in engineering, 36th for master’s degrees conferred in engineering and tied with 5 other institutions at 15th for master’s degrees conferred in mathematics. Data used for the analysis came from the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics’ Integrated Postsecondary Education Data Set for 2014-15, with analysis by Dr. Victor M.H. Borden and Dr. Rhonda V. Sharpe.
Bachelor’s Degrees in Engineering
NC State’s ranking of 24th in the nation in minority bachelor’s degrees in engineering follows #1 Georgia Tech, #2 University of California at San Diego, #3 University of Texas at Austin, #4 University of California at Berkeley and #5 Cal Tech at Pomona. Nearby University of Florida ranked 9th, University of Central Florida ranked 13th and Virginia Tech ranked 18th. University of Virginia, North Carolina A & T State University and University of South Florida’s Main Campus also made appearances in the top 50 at #41, #45 and #48, respectively. NC State ranked 27th in this category last year.
Master’s Degrees in Engineering
NC State’s ranking of 36th in the nation in minority master’s degrees in engineering follows #1 San Jose State, #2 Stanford, #3 University of Southern California, #4 Georgia Tech and #5 University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Other regional institutions included Florida International University and University of Florida at #16 and #18, Stratford University at #20, University of Central Florida at #35, Virginia Tech at #37 University of Alabama at Birmingham at #43, and Old Dominion at #50. NC State ranked 33rd in this category last year.
Master’s Degrees in Mathematics and Statistics
NC State’s ranking of 15th in the nation in minority master’s degrees in mathematics and statistics follows #1 Columbia, #2 Cal State Long Beach, #2 (tied) Rutgers University at New Brunswick, #4 Cal State, East Bay and #5 New York University. Other regional institutions included George Mason University, tied at #15, Georgia Tech at #26, Florida State at #30, University of West Florida, tied at #30, North Carolina A & T University at #39, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, tied at #39, Georgia State at #45, Southern University and A & M, tied at #45 and Virginia State, also tied at #45. NC State was not ranked in the top 50 in this category last year.
