NC State Sponsors Black Communities Conference

Black Communities: A Conference for Collaboration returns for a second year in its mission to “create partnerships and future collaborations between Black communities, academics and other organizations that will enhance, document and safeguard the life of these communities.”

NC State is a signature sponsor of this year’s conference, which will be held at the Carolina Theatre in Durham on September 9-11, 2019. Registration is still open.

Since 2018, conference hosts have included the Institute of African American Research, NC Growth, the Southern Historical Collection, the Center for the Study of the American South, the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise, NC Central University Research Compliance and Technology Transfer, Hayti Heritage Center and UNC Libraries, along with a large slate of local sponsors from education, industry and the community.

With three full days of presentations spanning over a dozen topics including food, arts, culture, music, education, the environment, history and heritage, health, gender and sexuality, religion, economy and business, technology, justice and law, and community, the conference offers over 250 lectures and symposia for attendees.

Among the attendees from NC State, members of the Chancellor’s African American Community Advisory Council (CACAAC) including current CACAAC President Saundra Williams will be in attendance. Williams will speak at the September 10, 2019 plenary session. The council advises the chancellor on matters to promote university and African American community relationships of mutual benefit and serves as a bridge between the two entities.
