ACE At Home in the World Grant Brings Multi-Faceted Array of Projects to NC State

Since being named in 2011 as one of eight institutions to become part of a national initiative spearheaded by the American Council on Education, NC State's At Home in the World team has brought several major projects to fruition.

In addition to the development of a university course on cultural competence (ECD 225: Developing Cross-Cultural Competence for Professional Success) and the selection of ten faculty fellows to develop courses in international and multicultural subjects, as previously reported in the Digest, the NC State At Home in the World team has also implemented a publicity campaign to promote international education at NC State and selected a student cohort to develop international and multicultural-focused activities.

The At Home in the World publicity campaign included posters and electronic billboards featuring NC State Study Abroad and Cooperative Education students and a bus decal of students that is currently featured on one of NC State's Wolfline buses (pictured above).

The At Home in the World student cohort was selected in Fall 2013, after applications from student organizations were sought for Student Activity Grants to support the creation of new or significantly enhanced co-curricular programs, events, or activities which meet the objectives of the At Home In The World initiative to collaboratively promote cross cultural understanding and competencies.

ACE's At Home in the World initiative was created to promote collaboration between international and diversity programs on college campuses. OIED Vice Provost Joanne Woodard co-chairs the NC State initiative along with Ingrid Schmidt, Director of the Study Abroad Office in the Division of International Affairs. The NC State At Home in the World team is an interdisciplinary group comprised of faculty and staff from several NC State offices and departments. Current members are: Adam Culley, Student Leadership and Engagement; Arnold Bell, Career Development Center; Beverly Williams, Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity; Carrie Zelna, Academic and Student Affairs - Assessment; Caylie Zidwick, Study Abroad; Clifford Griffin, Public and International Affairs; Craig Brookins, Department of Psychology, Heidi Hobbs, Public and International Affairs; Ingrid Schmidt, Study Abroad; James Kiwanuka-Tondo, Department of Communication; Jason DeRousie, Academic and Student Affairs - Assessment; Joanne Woodard; Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity, Joy Tongsri, Park Scholarships; Judy Day, Undergraduate Research; Lauren Ball, Office of International Services, Michael Bustle, Office of International Affairs; Monica Leach, Department of Social Work; Robert Sandruck, Poole College of Management - Academic Affairs; Roshaunda Breeden, Poole College of Management - Academic Affairs; Scott Carter, Study Abroad; Sheila Smith McKoy, African American Cultural Center; Susan Grant, Campus Life - University Housing; Tracey Ray, Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity; and Ursula Hairston, Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity.

In October, co-chairs Woodard and Schmidt were invited to present best practices in "Engaging Faculty" at the American Council on Education's "At Home in the World" Institute in Alexandria, VA.  "Build A Wall Project" for Eating Disorders Awareness
In February, the NC State Women's Center will acknowledge Eating Disorders Awareness Week through a new "Build A Wall Project." The project counters negative, unrealistic messages about body image that are propagated in the media through a montage of popular images from advertising that is covered over with bricks that contain body-positive messages. This can be done as a display in your area or as a program that includes viewing either Dreamworlds 3 or Killing Us Softly 4 with discussion facilitated by Women's Center staff or Movement peer educators. The Women's Center is offering both options to any campus unit/group throughout the month of February. For either a display or program, fill out the request form.  We will send materials in advance, including instructions. Contact Jenn Scott at 919-515-2012 with any questions.
