New Military and Veterans Resource Center to Host Open House on January 12

Please join us in celebrating the opening of the brand new NC State Military and Veterans Resource Center on Thursday, January 12, 2017 from 1:00-5:00 p.m. in Witherspoon Student Center, Room 104. We welcome all students, faculty, staff and alumni to this open house event. Martin Luther King, Jr. Documentary Film Screening and Discussion on January 12

In commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, please join NCSU Libraries on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in D.H. Hill Library's West Wing Auditorium for a screening of The Witness: From the Balcony of Room 306 (running time 26 minutes). The film recounts the events of April 4,1968, when the Reverend Samuel "Billy" Kyles stood beside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee and bore witness to his brutal assassination. Following the screening, Dr. Jason Miller, associate professor of English at NC State, will discuss his groundbreaking discovery of a recording of Dr. King’s Rocky Mount speech, a precursor to King's famous “I have a dream” speech delivered in Washington, D.C. The discovery made international news when Miller unveiled the recording in August 2015 at the Hunt Library.

International Festival Planning Committee Seeks Interested Volunteers

NC State's Student Government is planning an International Festival for NC State! The purpose of this event is to demonstrate appreciation for diversity, to educate the campus community about the world and to encourage interactions between individuals of all backgrounds while upholding the values of diversity,  inclusivity and cultural appreciation. The Festival will be held on Friday, March 31, 2017 from 12:00-5:00 p.m. on Stafford Commons, Talley Student Union. The committee is seeking planning committee members, exhibitors, cultural showcase participants and event volunteers.

Nomination Period for 2017 Equity for Women Awards Open until January 23

The NC State Council on the Status of Women invites you to nominate NC State faculty, staff and students for the Equity for Women Awards. These awards are made annually to recognize faculty, staff and students for their outstanding leadership in establishing equity for women at NC State. Nominations are solicited from all members of the campus community, including faculty, staff, students, alumni and partners. This year, we will be awarding up to three individuals. Submit your nominations by January 23, 2017.

Student Government Town Hall to Focus on Sexual Assault and Bystander Intervention

Student Government will be hosting a Town Hall on Thursday, January 26, 2017 to talk about current initiatives, new initiatives and general concerns regarding sexual assault and bystander intervention at NC State. The town hall will be held in the Coastal Ballroom, Talley Student Union from 4:00-5:30 p.m. with free cookies and a gift card raffle.

Diversity Lecture: “Equity vs. Excellence: A False Dichotomy in Science and Society”

Dr. Sylvester Jim Gates, Jr. will give the 2017 College of Humanities and Social Sciences Diversity Lecture on “Equity vs Excellence: A False Dichotomy in Science and Society” on Thursday, February 9, 2017 in Talley Student Union, Room 3285 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. A Distinguished University Professor, University System of Maryland Regents Professor and John S. Toll Professor of Physics at the University of Maryland, Dr. Gates is a theoretical physicist whose American Academy of Arts and Sciences essay led Supreme Court Justice Roberts to ask, “What unique perspective does a minority student bring to a physics class?” during the oral argument in the Fisher v. Texas case in December 2015.

Multicultural Student Affairs to Host Freshman Honors Convocation on February 10

Each year at the beginning of the spring semester, Freshman Honors Convocation recognizes African American, Native American and Hispanic/Latinx first-year students who achieve a 3.0 or higher GPA during their first semester at NC State. NC State is proud to have consistently honored 40% or more of these freshman classes for the last several years. Please join us for this event, which will be held on February 10, 2017 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the Piedmont-Mountains Ballroom, Talley Student Union.

Tunnel of Oppression Event Seeks Volunteer Actors, Tour Guides and Volunteers

We are currently recruiting actors, tour guides and volunteers to help with this year's Tunnel of Oppression, which will be held Tuesday, March 21, 2017 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. and Wednesday through Thursday, March 22 - 23, 2017 from 3:00-9:00 p.m. in the State Ballroom, Talley Student Union. This is a very big annual event, so we need a lot of help: we are looking for 30 tour guides, 160 volunteers and 180 actors. (No prior acting experience is required!) Save the Date: 2017 Lavender Graduation

The GLBT Center will host its annual Lavender Graduation ceremony on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the Piedmont-Mountains Ballroom, Talley Student Union. Lavender Graduation provides an opportunity to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of 2017 GLBT graduates. All faculty, staff and students are invited to attend. No RSVP is required.
