A Big Week to Celebrate, Investigate, and Commemorate Diversity at NC State

Several major events will take place this week on campus as part of Diversity Education Week. Don’t forget to pick up your “I Heart Diversity” T-shirt, while supplies last, at 11:30AM today in the Brickyard. This evening, special guest Bishop Gene Robinson will speak at 7:00PM in Witherspoon Cinema on “God Believes in Love: Straight Talk About Gay Marriage,” following last night’s showing of Love Free, or Die, a documentary about Robinson’s personal journey. Tomorrow evening, the Annual Fall Diversity Dialogue will feature Tim Wise, antiracist author and educator, at 6:30PM in Witherspoon Cinema (tickets available at the Bookstore). We encourage you to take advantage of these free speaking events.

On Thursday, we invite the entire NC State community to wear purple while attending the third annual NC State Ally Rally at 11:30AM in the Brickyard. Two years ago, NC State was rocked by hate messages spray painted on the outside of our GLBT Center. The unintended consequence of those actions was a unified outpouring of support from the NC State community. Hundreds attended the first ally rally, held shortly after that incident, thus establishing a tradition of gathering NC State allies to show continuing commitment to the cause of supporting our GLBT brothers and sisters. Transform yourself from a quiet supporter to someone with a voice of support. Also happening concurrently on Thursday is These Hands Don’t Hurt from 10:00AM-2:00PM in the Brickyard. Make a handprint on the canvas and make a pledge to help end violence. After the Ally Rally and adding your handprint to the Women's Center banner, hurry over to the African American Cultural Center in Witherspoon Student Center from 12:00PM-2:00PM for the Lunch and Learn: “Trayvon Martin and Social Justice: Next Steps.” On Friday, wear your “I Heart Diversity” T-shirt!

These are just a few of the numerous events scheduled for this year’s Diversity Education Week. See the entire schedule on the NC State Diversity website. We hope to see you at the events!
2013 Human Rights Day Observance: Spotlight on Staff
The annual NC State Human Rights Day Observance for 2013 will be held on Monday, December 2 at 9:00AM in Room 356 of the African American Cultural Center. Although International Human Rights Day is observed every year on December 10, since that is typically during final exams, NC State chooses another day on which to commemorate the event. At this year's program, Chancellor Randy Woodson will carry out the traditional declaration signing and will also recognize staff who volunteer in service that supports human rights. This is the second year in the series of events that spotlight members of the NC State community who commit their personal time to support human rights. Last year's event included a spotlight on students. Future years will spotlight faculty and alumni. To help us identify staff to be spotlighted at this year's event, please complete this brief form. Faculty, staff, and administrators are asked to encourage their staff colleagues who participate in service to submit their information. The deadline for submissions is November 15, 2013. Contact Dr. Deb Luckadoo, Director of Staff Diversity, with any questions.
Chancellor's First Year Student Leadership Program to Begin Accepting Nominations on October 21
The Chancellor's First Year Student Leadership Program (CFYSLP) will begin accepting nominations for 2014 beginning on October 21, 2013. Student participants are required to be in their first year at NC State. Transfer students are also welcome to apply. Students from historically underrepresented groups, from rural areas and with a declared major in science, technology, engineering, and mathematical fields are particularly encouraged to apply. However, all student majors are welcome to apply. The Program seeks to identify and nurture a cohort of emerging leaders. The primary objective is to build a cadre of student leaders who are civic-minded, intellectually able, and professionally skilled, and who will become the community, business, and national leaders of the future. See the flyer for more information.
