Point Foundation Scholar Kyle Vey Travels to Washington
Dedicated NC State sophomore and GLBT Center staff member selected to meet the Bidens

Kyle Vey, a sophomore in biomedical and mechanical engineering, is avidly involved in the GLBT Center, the GLBT Community Alliance, and Student Government here at NC State. In addition to his involvement on campus, he is a recipient of the nation's largest LGBTQ based scholarship, the Point Foundation Scholarship. The Point Foundation empowers promising LGBTQ students to achieve their full academic and leadership potential, despite the obstacles often put before them, to make a significant impact on society.

Kyle was recently selected as one of the representatives from the Point Foundation to attend a reception with Vice President Joe Biden, his wife Dr. Jill Biden, and many of the highest-ranking LGBTQ officials in the Obama administration. The reception aimed to bring together emerging LGBTQ leaders in the United States so they could inform one another about the efforts going on across the country. Additionally, the gathering included speeches from both of the Bidens, who assured the young leaders that their determination and hard work has not gone unnoticed, and that is key in ensuring equal rights for LGBTQ individuals.

Every year Kyle is required to perform a project benefitting the LGBTQ community as part of his scholarship. Last year he spoke to several classes at NC State about the anti-gay marriage amendment to the North Carolina constitution. This year he is planning to work with homelessness in the youth LGBTQ community. In the future, Kyle plans to speak to high school students across the southeastern United States about the challenges facing LGBTQ individuals in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields with his Point Mentor, Dr. Ana Carneiro of Vanderbilt University.
