Started in 1981 with the intent to unify activists across the county working to end interpersonal violence, the “day of unity” has evolved into a month of activities increasing awareness and prevention of domestic and interpersonal violence. The NC State Women’s Center promotes discussion and engagement through the following programs:
These Hands Don't Hurt: During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Women’s Center hosts “These Hands Don’t Hurt,” where the public is invited to stamp their hands in a pledge against violence. Banners will be displayed around campus to signify our ongoing campaign. Please join us from 12:00-2:00 p.m. on the following days:
• October 15 – on the Centennial Campus Oval
• October 27 – College of Veterinary Medicine main building lounge
• October 29 – College of Veterinary Medicine covered walkway near Port City Java
Silent Witness: Nationally, the Silent Witness Initiative is a program dedicated to ending murder as a result of domestic violence by the year 2020. At NC State, there are ten red, life-size silhouettes in the Silent Witness Exhibit carrying a plaque with the story of a local and/or traditional college-aged person who was murdered as a result of domestic violence. Witnesses will be on display October 20-31 in the Talley Student Union. Beginning in November, the witnesses will be hosted by different departments and buildings across campus for the remainder of the academic year.
Healthy Relationships 101: In partnership with Kappa Alpha Psi, the Women’s Center will present a workshop on identifying and creating healthy relationships. Program is open to all NC State students. October 7, 2014, 7:00 p.m., Daniels Hall.
Don’t Cancel that Class: The Women’s Center assists course instructors and student groups who request additional diversity-related education including presentations focused on healthy relationships, interpersonal violence, and resources available on and off campus. Invite us to conduct a workshop for your class/group! Please see the website for more information.
