OIED Forms National
Diversity Advisory Board

The Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity (OIED) has formed a National Diversity Advisory Board (NDAB) comprised of distinguished NC State alumni and friends. The NDAB was first convened in May 2013 for the purpose of gathering a group of influential leaders in a range of diverse professions, with an affinity to NC State and a vested interest in helping to guide diversity programs and initiatives at the University.

At its initial meeting, NDAB members received an introduction to OIED, each other, and NDAB's purpose. The day-long meeting included overviews of OIED and its units, which include Equal Opportunity and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Multicultural Student Affairs, the African American Cultural Center, the GLBT Center, and the Women's Center. The day closed with strategic planning. The Board convened again on November 1, 2013, just before NC State Homecoming weekend. The November meeting included remarks from NC State Provost Warwick Arden, the Pack's PACT program, and NC State's Partnership with Historically Underutilized Businesses/Minority Business Enterprise. The day concluded with a tour of Hunt Library's state-of-the-art facilities and committee meetings.

Joanne Woodard, Vice Provost for Institutional Equity and Diversity, explained that "the National Diversity Advisory Board is a 'best practice' promoting diversity and inclusion in academe. The board members are sincere in helping NC State to be an inclusive environment for discovery, learning, and civic engagement that celebrates diverse people with diverse talents. Our office had enthusiastic response from alumni and supporters who agreed to join the Board and give of their 'time, talent and treasure.' While our office has a number of advisory boards comprised of NC State faculty, staff, and students, the National Diversity Advisory Board provides a valuable perspective from stakeholders external to the university who are committed to supporting the mission of NC State as well as giving to OIED's Diversity and Equity Fund."

The Board meets on campus semi-annually to stay up to date on current developments of OIED and its collaborators, to establish and enhance relationships with and within the University, and to offer perspectives and resources in the areas of equity and diversity. NDAB members hail from many professions and locations.
