Last spring, staff members in NC State's GLBT Center learned that actress Laverne Cox would be making an appearance at East Carolina University. They immediately worked to procure her visit to NC State. This hoped-for visit will take place on
Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in the Talley Student Union Ballroom before a full-capacity crowd.
Please note that anyone who reserved a ticket must pick up their ticket by this Friday, November 7, 2014, or it will be distributed to a waitlist member.
An outspoken transgender advocate, Cox is the first trans-woman to produce and star in her own television show,
TRANSForm Me, appear on the cover of
TIME Magazine [June 9, 2014] and be nominated for an EMMY. She is also the first trans-woman of color to have a leading role on a mainstream scripted television show,
Orange is the New Black. She received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for the role of “Sophia Burset.”
Cox has won rave reviews for the groundbreaking role of “Sophia Burset,” an incarcerated African American transgender woman.
TIME magazine named “Sophia Burset” the 4th most influential fictional character of 2013. She is also a recipient of the Dorian rising star award for
Orange is the New Black.
A renowned, in-demand speaker, Cox has taken her empowering message of moving beyond gender expectations to live more authentically all over the country.
Cox was named one of
Outmagazine's "Out 100," one of the country's top 50 trans icons by
The Huffington Post, and one of
Metro Source magazine's "55 People We Love."
