OIED Brings New
Diversity Liaisons on
Board for 2014-15

Successful Program
Expands for Broader Impact
Recruit like a coach! That is the message of Joel Ducoste, one of the 2014-15 OIED faculty diversity liaisons. Joel Ducoste and several other faculty liaisons are focusing this year on increasing diversity in faculty recruiting and hiring. One thing that they’ve learned is that athletic coaches start early and check in often with promising talented student athletes, starting in middle school. For faculty recruiting, the analogous approach is to develop relationships with promising graduate students and keep in regular contact with them throughout their graduate and postdoctoral years. This way, they will think about NC State when they are ready to apply for a faculty position.

OIED is pleased to announce that nine faculty, representing seven academic colleges, are serving as OIED faculty diversity liaisons in 2014-15:

The OIED faculty diversity liaisons greatly amplify NC State’s power and effectiveness in promoting diversity and inclusion. The liaisons serve one-year renewable terms and are conducting five exciting initiatives this year. The 2014-15 initiatives include:
  1. Study and promote NC State’s policies and programs for helping faculty combine family responsibilities with faculty expectations (Montserrat Fuentes).

  2. Lead NC State’s efforts to increase representation among Hispanic/Latino students and faculty (Maria Correa).

  3. Develop an Indigenous Collaborative on Education, Research and Service in North Carolina (Susan Faircloth).

  4. Support diversity, equity and inclusion at NC State and in the field of Public Administration. (Rajade Berry-James).

  5. Increase diversity in faculty recruiting (Robin Abrams, Joel Ducoste, Wendy Krause, Thomas Schaefer and Mary Wyer).
