Academic Achievement Shines at 2013 Freshman Convocation

High Achieving Freshmen from all Colleges Honored at Ceremony

The 2012-13 school year is more than halfway over, and freshmen from all of NC State’s colleges are well aware of that fact. Those who used their time wisely during the first semester were honored on the evening of Friday, February 1, 2013 at NC State’s 18th annual Freshman Honors Convocation.

Convocation trophyAt Convocation, Multicultural Student Affairs honored first year African American, Hispanic, and Native American students who achieved a fall semester grade point average of 3.0 or higher during their first semester at NC State. This year, there was ample reason to celebrate. Several colleges had a record-setting first semester, with over 40% of freshmen achieving a 3.0 GPA. Each honoree received a small commemorative trophy and much praise and encouragement to keep putting forth the effort to achieve. An even more select group from among the honorees was highlighted as the potential future NC State valedictorians. Way to go, freshmen!

Sarita BrownThis year’s Convocation speaker was Sarita Brown, President and co-founder of Excelencia in Education, a not-for-profit organization working to accelerate Latino success in higher education by linking research, policy, and practice to serve Latino students. Ms. Brown’s career includes promoting minority success at the University of Texas at Austin and an appointment as Executive Director of the White House Initiative for Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans under President Bill Clinton.
