Red, White & Black Walk Garners National Attention

Joint Project Developed by African American Cultural Center, History Department, and Libraries

Toni ThorpeSince April of 2011, Toni Thorpe of NC State’s African American Cultural Center and Dr. Walter Jackson, an NC State history professor, have offered a once-per-semester walking tour that highlights African American history at NC State. Highlights of the tour include the enrollment of the first four African American undergrads in 1956; the first African American graduate in 1957; Ellen McGuire, a former slave who worked at NC State for fifty years; and many other campus firsts and notables. The Walk is scheduled for November and April, with the next one happening on April 11, 2013. The tour is approximately one hour in length and ends with a reception at the African American Cultural Center. Please contact the Center at 919-515-5210 for  information about how to participate.

In November of 2011, NC State Libraries’ Digital Library Initiative Team released an app for mobile devices that simulates the walking tour, providing a self-guided tour that is available for anyone at any time. The app takes advantage of the Libraries’ digital collections to include research, readings, images, and audio. The tour has changed the perceptions of those who have experienced it, transforming current places on campus into living monuments to the turbulent and triumphant times that have shaped our University. The mobile tour can be accessed online or downloaded as an app from iTunes.

Recently, both the Red, White & Black Tour and its electronic counterpart have garnered national attention, receiving coverage in American Libraries Magazine in January and Diverse Issues in Higher Education on February 17, 2013.
