March is Women's HERstory Month at NC State – Join Us for Programs!

For the second consecutive year, the NC State Women's Center will coordinate a series of programs for Women's HERstory Month throughout March. Several major events will highlight this year's theme, "Finding Our Freedom." We also invite the NC State community to submit programs occurring during the month to the online calendar.

Cultural Competencies Webinar Open to All; OIED to Host for Campus

The Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity will host a a webinar viewing of "Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: Deepen the Cultural Competencies of Your Faculty and Staff" and subsequent dialogue. The viewing will take place on Thursday, March 30, 2017 from 2:00-4:00 pm in Witherspoon Student Center, Room 126 (the Washington Sankofa Room).

NC State Co-Hosts Asian American Conference at McKimmon Center

The East Coast Asian American Student Union (ECAASU) conference took place this weekend at NC State's McKimmon Center. The conference celebrated its 40th anniversary this year and was hosted jointly by Duke University, NC State, and UNC Chapel Hill.

Physics Students Think and Do

When inappropriate messages were posted on a social media network last fall, physics students Austyn Long and Elliott Holliday, both juniors, turned their thoughts into action. Dr. Sharonda LeBlanc, a post-doc at UNC Chapel Hill in chemistry and physics and co-chair of the NC Women of Color Research Network regional chapter, joined them.

REMINDER – Campus Diversity Conversation to Be Held in Stewart Theatre on March 1

The Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity (OIED) invites the campus community to attend and participate in a “Campus Diversity Conversation: An Update on Diversity Initiatives at NC State” to be held on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. in Stewart Theatre. OIED will be joined by the chancellor, provost, the Division of Academic and Student Affairs and numerous campus partners to provide updates on diversity initiatives across the university.

DEPTH Diversity Peer Educators Offer Cultural Competence 101 Workshop for Students

DEPTH (Diversity Education for Our Peers to Thrive) enhances the NC State community by engaging students in the creation and maintenance of accessible, diverse and inclusive multicultural environments. We deliver on that commitment by striving to foster spaces that encourage meaningful, transformative dialogue. DEPTH will host the Cultural Competence 101 workshop on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. in Witherspoon Student Center, Room 201. Topics covered include addressing and navigating cultural differences, understanding complexities of identity and creating a basic grasp of intersectionality. Registration is not required.

GLBT Center Offers New Asexuality and Aromantic Workshop on March 1

The GLBT Center will host a new workshop titled “Not Driven by Desire: Understanding Asexual and Aromantic Identities” on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 from 2:00-4:00 p.m in Talley Student Union, Room 3222. Whether our society acknowledges it or not, there are multiple factors involved in relationships besides sexual desire. This two-hour workshop explores identities in which sexual attraction or romantic attraction are not experienced to the degree our culture expects. Participants will learn about how asexual and aromantic identities impact someone’s life and interactions with the rest of the GLBT community and how to affirm and support their experiences. This workshop is open to NC State undergraduates, graduate students, staff, faculty and alumni as well as interested members of the local community. Registration is encouraged but not required.

Peer Mentor Program Accepting Student Mentor Applications Through March 1

The Peer Mentor Program aims to create a supportive network for culturally diverse incoming first-year students. The program pairs incoming students with upperclassmen, who serve as mentors throughout the incoming student’s first year. Mentors maintain relationships with their mentees and help ensure their growth and success. The program also works to connect first-year students to campus resources, student organizations and events that match the interests of each individual student.

Passport Services to Hold Fair with Walk-In Hours on March 20

NC State's Passport Services, the newest addition to International Affairs, will hold special walk-in hours via a Passport Fair on March 20, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Witherspoon Student Center, Room 126. The office is regularly open four days per week, by appointment only, typically filling up six to eight weeks in advance. Students, faculty and the community are welcome to attend the fair to apply for first-time adult passports without an appointment on this day only.

“Truth Seeking by the Lights of Perverted Science: Exposing the Flint Water Disaster"

The Gerald H. Elkan Distinguished Lecture in Science and Society, “Truth Seeking by the Lights of Perverted Science: Exposing the Flint Water Disaster” will be presented on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in Hunt Library. Named among the most influential people in the world by Time, Fortune, Politico and Foreign Policy in 2016, Edwards' research laid the groundwork for investigative science uncovering the 2001-2004 D.C. Lead Crisis and the 2014-2016 Flint Water Disaster. This talk is presented by the Park Scholarships at NC State, with support from the NCSU Libraries and the College of Sciences and is free and open to the public.

NC State's First International Festival to be Held on March 31

The International Festival at NC State will be held on Friday March 31, 2017 from 12:00-4:00 p.m. on Stafford Commons. This event will promote cultural competency and expose students, faculty and staff to new perspectives and traditions from different areas around the world. There will be cultural performances throughout the event, including various forms of creative and artistic expression such as music, dance and poetry. GLBT Center Invites Applications for 2017 Student Leadership Awards

The GLBT Center will relaunch its annual awards for student leadership and activism this spring. The Thomas H. Stafford Leadership Award recognizes a student who has demonstrated service to the GLBT community through peer education, peer mentoring, community building and/or community outreach or service. The Evelyn Q. Reiman Activism Award recognizes a student who has worked to increase awareness about social justice issues, identify strategies for enacting change, engage peers in social justice activism and/or foster collaboration across communities to address campus or community climate concerns. Both awards will be given at Lavender Graduation on Wednesday, April 26 at 7:00 p.m. in the Piedmont-Mountains Ballroom, Talley Student Union. The application deadline is Friday, April 7, 2017 at 5:00 p.m.

GLBT Center's Lavender Graduation to be Held on April 26

The GLBT Center will host its annual Lavender Graduation ceremony on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the Piedmont-Mountains Ballroom, Talley Student Union. Lavender Graduation provides an opportunity to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of 2017 GLBT graduates. All faculty, staff and students are invited to attend. No RSVP is required.
