Institutional Oppression of GLBT Youth in the Juvenile Justice System

The GLBT Center will host a guest lecture on the experiences of GLBT youth within the juvenile justice system. This lecture will examine how race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation and gender identity act as factors that increase the likelihood that youth will be funneled into the criminal justice system.

2017 Sisterhood Dinner – Some Seats Still Available for Registration

The Sisterhood Dinner celebrates the contributions and accomplishments of NC State women. This year's theme is "Empowering Women Together." Table registration is $300 for 8 seats. Individual registration is $35 per seat. In addition to entertainment and a keynote speaker, the 2017 Equity for Women Awards will be presented during the dinner.

GLBT Faculty and Staff Luncheon on February 6

Part of the mission of the GLBT Center is to provide ongoing support for GLBT faculty and staff on campus. To fulfill that mission, the GLBT Center coordinates the GLBT Faculty and Staff Network to provide an opportunity for GLBT faculty and staff to connect and form community, to supply informal and formal feedback about campus climate, to support and mentor GLBT students and to connect with prospective GLBT faculty and staff members. The Network holds monthly business meetings and hosts monthly socials. The GLBT Center will host a luncheon for current and prospective Network members on Monday, February 6, 2017 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. in Witherspoon 356. RSVP to Renee Wells.

Diversity Lecture: “Equity vs. Excellence: A False Dichotomy in Science and Society”

Dr. Sylvester Jim Gates, Jr. will give the 2017 College of Humanities and Social Sciences Diversity Lecture on “Equity vs Excellence: A False Dichotomy in Science and Society” on Thursday, February 9, 2017 in Talley Student Union, Room 3285 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. A Distinguished University Professor, University System of Maryland Regents Professor and John S. Toll Professor of Physics at the University of Maryland, Dr. Gates is a theoretical physicist whose American Academy of Arts and Sciences essay led Supreme Court Justice Roberts to ask, “What unique perspective does a minority student bring to a physics class?” during the oral argument in the Fisher v. Texas case in December 2015.

GLBT Center to Host Workshop on Racial Justice on February 9

As part of the lineup of workshops for the 2016-2017 GLBT Advocate Program and as part of the celebration of Black History Month, the GLBT Center will host a “What is Racial Justice?” workshop on Thursday, February 9, 2017 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. in Talley Student Union, Room 4101. This two-hour workshop is open to NC State undergraduates, graduate students, staff, faculty and alumni as well as interested members of the local community. The workshop will help participants contextualize contemporary conversations and events within our specific history of race relations, understand the ways racism operates (interpersonally, culturally, institutionally) and reflect on the ways each of us can and must play a role in creating cultural change.

Multicultural Student Affairs to Host Freshman Honors Convocation on February 10

Each year at the beginning of the spring semester, Freshman Honors Convocation recognizes African American, Native American and Hispanic/Latinx first-year students who achieve a 3.0 or higher GPA during their first semester at NC State. NC State is proud to have consistently honored 40% or more of these freshman classes for the last several years. Please join us for this event on Friday, February 10, 2017 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. in the Piedmont-Mountains Ballroom, Talley Student Union.

GLBT Center to Offer Transportation to Historic Thousands on Jones Street on February 11

The GLBT Center will provide transportation to the Historic Thousands on Jones Street (HKonJ) Moral March to the capitol on Saturday, Feburary 11, 2017. HKonJ is a mass march that has taken place in downtown Raleigh for the past 11 years to bring awareness to the major issues affecting not only North Carolinians, but the entire nation. HKonJ is a great opportunity for your voice to be heard! If you believe that an injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, this is a vital opportunity to work toward a better North Carolina for everyone. Join the GLBT Center as we witness a historic march for voting rights, labor rights, reproductive justice, education equity, police and criminal justice reform and equal protection and recognition under the law.

Poole College of Management to Offer Free Income Tax Assistance

NC State University Poole College of Management is hosting free income tax preparation assistance sessions for the 2017 income tax return season. The service is offered through the IRS-certified Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Poole College student volunteers in the college’s bachelor of accounting degree program completed a training session and will be providing assistance on four Saturdays during this tax season, with faculty supervision. The help sessions will be held in Nelson Hall room B400 from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on the following Saturdays: February 11, February 25, March 18 and April 8. This VITA site will not be able to prepare 1040NR returns and there is an income limit of $64,000 for free filing.

GLBT Center to Host Microaggressions Workshop

As part of the lineup of workshops for the 2016-2017 GLBT Advocate Program, the GLBT Center will host a “Recognizing and Responding to Microaggressions” workshop on Monday, February 13, 2017 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. in Talley Student Union, Room 3222. This three-hour workshop is open to NC State undergraduates, graduate students, staff, faculty and alumni as well as interested members of the local community. The workshop will help participants learn how to identify microaggressions, understand their impact, and respond appropriately when they occur.

Staff Senate Diversity Committee to Hold Social with Dancing and Demos on February 16

The NC State community is invited to join the Staff Senate Diversity Committee on Thursday, February 16, 2017 from 5:00-8:00 pm. in Witherspoon 126 for "Dancing Around the World," a social dance featuring heavy hors d'oevres, instructions, demonstrations and open dancing. Office of International Affairs Accepting Nominations for Global Awards Through March 1

The Office of International Affairs is accepting nominations through March 1 for the 2017 Global Awards, which recognize NC State faculty and staff across campus for making contributions to global research, scholarship and service. Award recipients will be announced at the Global Engagement Exposition on April 18, 2017 and will receive small stipends towards future international travel.

African American Cultural Center Sponsoring Bus Trip to National Museum

The African American Cultural Center is sponsoring a bus trip to Washington, D.C. to tour the newly opened National Museum of African American History and Culture on Sunday, March 5, 2017. The trip includes a round trip bus ticket to Washington, D.C., a timed-entry pass to the museum and lunch at no cost to students. We are pleased to invite students who participate, for a minimum of 3 hours, as a character representative or support staff in the Blacks in Wax Live Museum. If there are available seats following this event, we will open up the process to fill additional seats.

NC State's First International Festival to be Held on March 31

The International Festival at NC State will be held on Friday March 31, 2017 from 12:00-4:00 p.m. on Stafford Commons. This event will promote cultural competency and expose students, faculty and staff to new perspectives and traditions from different areas around the world. GLBT Center's Lavender Graduation to be Held on April 26

The GLBT Center will host its annual Lavender Graduation ceremony on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the Piedmont-Mountains Ballroom, Talley Student Union. Lavender Graduation provides an opportunity to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of 2017 GLBT graduates. All faculty, staff and students are invited to attend. No RSVP is required.
