On February 11, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. in the African American Cultural Center Art Gallery (Witherspoon Student Center, 2nd Floor), the AACC will host a reception and artist talk with the creator of the current featured exhibit, "Irrevocable Grace," graphic artist, illustrator and photographer Jaleesa B. Maye of Durham, North Carolina.

The exhibit includes collages that incorporate historical photographs of African American women archived by the Library of Congress. While researching the project, Maye "slowly began to realize a commonality among the women depicted. Be it 1894 or 1956, all of the women seemed to possess a bold, unyielding grace." The exhibit is free and open to the public now through May 15, 2015.

NC State "Leaders Under Construction" (LUC) Conference Accepting Proposals

The "Leaders Under Construction" (LUC) Conference will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2015, from 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at NC State Park Alumni Center. This conference, as a collaboration between many campus partners, is the first of its kind to focus specifically on emerging student leaders.

The Student Leader Training Coordinating Committee is currently seeking presentations to encourage high impact, high profile students to embrace their growing leadership.

Proposals are due Friday, February 13, 2015 and should cover a topic that relates to the themes of the conference:

- Setting the foundation (acquiring knowledge and fundamental leadership concepts)
- Forming relationships (creating and fostering interpersonal relationships)
- Building competency (understanding practical day to day operations)

This conference aims to be interactive, engaging and fun for all participants, while providing valuable tools and insight. As such, dynamic presentations that go beyond the lecture format will be given preference (e.g. case studies, interactive activities, fishbowl discussions, etc). Registration Open for Spring 2015 Project SAFE & Trans* 101 Workshops

The GLBT Center invites interested participants to register for the upcoming Project SAFE and Trans* 101 workshops. All workshops are free and open to faculty, staff, students and community members. Registration is required.

Project SAFE is a three-hour workshop open to NC State undergraduates, graduate students, staff, faculty and alumni as well as interested members of the local community. The training program is designed to prepare participants to understand and address the needs of GLBT students. The curriculum addresses a wide range of information, including identitying terms; issues that GLBT students often deal with during the coming out process; concerns that GLBT students face; ways that allies can create inclusive environments; where allies can refer students who need to report harassment; the on- and off-campus resources available to students. Trans* 101 is a two-hour workshop designed to introduce participants to the spectrum of transgender, gender-nonconforming and gender-questioning identities and expressions. This workshop addresses common issues faced by trans* students and strategies campus community members can use to be trans* inclusive. See the website for Trans* 101 workshop times or to register.

A joint initiative of the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity and the Student Government Diversity Commission, this series features interactive programs, workshops, films and panel discussions.

2015 Chancellor's Creating
Community Award Nominations Now Open

The Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity (OIED) and the University Diversity Advisory Committee are seeking nominations for the 9th Annual Chancellor's Creating Community Awards, which will be held on Monday, April 20, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in the Talley Student Center Ballroom. The Awards recognize faculty, staff, colleges, students and student organizations that have made exceptional efforts and contributions in the areas of equity, diversity and inclusion. Please submit one or more nominations via the online nomination form by Monday, April 6, 2015.

Award Categories include: Outstanding Faculty, Outstanding Staff, Outstanding Student, Outstanding College/Division and Outstanding Student Organization. One award will be given in each area. See go.ncsu.edu/diversityawards for the nomination form. Individuals, colleges/divisions and student organizations may self-nominate. See the website for more information about nomination criteria.

Note: OIED staff and other university employees whose key job responsibilities connect with equity, diversity and inclusion are not eligible for these awards. "Southern Smash" Event to Raise Awareness

Whether it is the number on the scale, calories, grades, miles, speed or anything in between, we allow so many exterior things to weigh us down.

Founded in November 2012, Southern Smash was created to fill a silent void in our society. Poor body image and negative self-talk have sadly become the cultural norm. Southern Smash wants to change this disturbing 'new normal' and start a different conversation around bodies and self-worth. They aim to educate the public about the dangers of eating disorders but also to empower everyone to celebrate and embrace true beauty and self-love through their signature scale smashing event!

Come join Student Health Services, Counseling Center, University Recreation, GLBT Center and the Women's Center and SMASH those perfect numbers in an afternoon of empowering activities, including Let it Go balloons, Dare to Love Yourself cards, and Scale Smashing in the Brickyard on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

GLBT Center Lunch and Learn for Faculty

The GLBT Center is partnering with the Office of Faculty Development to offer a Lunch and Learn workshop on “Understanding and Supporting GLBT Students in the Classroom.” The workshop will provide faculty with a brief overview of the services offered by the GLBT Center and how the Center can serve as a resource for faculty. In addition, the presentation will cover some of the main issues that GLBT students face on college campuses, strategies that faculty can use to support GLBT students, and techniques faculty can use to respond to inappropriate comments in the classroom. The workshop will be held on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. in Clark Hall, Room 405. Lunch will be provided. Please register online.
