In its "Top Producers of African-American Graduates," the publication lists the top 100 producers of undergraduate and graduate degrees awarded to African-American students in business, education, engineering and social sciences.

Have you Taken the Trans 101 Workshop Yet? New Opportunity on March 16

The GLBT Center will host Trans 101 on Thursday, March 16, 2017 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Trans 101 is a two-hour workshop open to NC State undergraduates, graduate students, staff, faculty and alumni as well as interested members of the local community. The workshop is designed to introduce participants to the spectrum of transgender, gender-nonconforming and gender-questioning identities and expressions. This workshop addresses common issues faced by transgender students and provides strategies campus community members can use to be trans-inclusive. Registration is not required but is encouraged.

Common Reading Committee Invites NC State Community to Kickoff for 2017 Selection

Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates is NC State’s 2017 Common Reading Program selection. Coates is a national correspondent for The Atlantic and author. Between the World and Me is a #1 New York Times bestseller and a finalist for the National Book Award. A MacArthur “Genius Grant” fellow, Coates has received the National Magazine Award, the Hillman Prize for Opinion and Analysis Journalism and the George Polk Award for his Atlantic cover story “The Case for Reparations.” Coates is also the writer of the Black Panther comic book series for Marvel and conducted a notable interview with former President Barack Obama. Join the committee for an initial meeting about the selection on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in Talley Student Union.

African American Faculty and Staff Organization to Present Seminar on Homebuying

The African American Faculty and Staff Organization (AAFSO) will offer a homebuying seminar for its Be Empowered! Seminar Session on Thursday, March 16, 2017 in Witherspoon Student Center, Room 356 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. with guest speaker Wyona Goodwin, realtor. The seminar will cover preparing to buy a home in the Triangle area, buying vs. building and homebuying myths.

Submit Poster Proposals for the 2017 Gender and Equity Research Symposium

The Women's Center invites students to submit poster proposals for the 2017 Gender and Equity Research Symposium. Accepted posters will be printed by the Women's Center. Posters should address gender, intersectional identity and equity in research. Students who are completing research this semester are encouraged to apply. Examples of research include race, gender, class, ableism and orientation, as well as the use of critical and feminist theories. Scholars from all disciplines are encouraged to apply. Proposals should include an abstract of no more than 150 words and a proposal of no more than 800 words. Submissions are due by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, March 17, 2017. Proposal applicants will be informed of their presentation status by Tuesday, March 28, 2017. The Gender and Equity Research Symposium will be held on Tuesday, April 25, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. in Talley 3285.

Women's Center Seeks Assistant Director for Interpersonal Violence Services

The Women's Center invites applications for the assistant director for interpersonal violence services. The position contributes to the overarching mission, vision and goals of the Women’s Center by overseeing the center’s efforts related to campus response and prevention of all forms of interpersonal violence, including sexual assault, relationship violence and stalking. The position reports to the Women’s Center director and is an integral part of the center’s team. The position is a full-time position that directly supervises the rape prevention education coordinator.

The Global Training Initiative's Holiday Homestay Program provides international visiting students at NC State an opportunity to experience American traditions during the spring holiday. “Truth Seeking by the Lights of Perverted Science: Exposing the Flint Water Disaster"

The Gerald H. Elkan Distinguished Lecture in Science and Society, “Truth Seeking by the Lights of Perverted Science: Exposing the Flint Water Disaster” will be presented on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in Hunt Library. Named among the most influential people in the world by Time, Fortune, Politico and Foreign Policy in 2016, Edwards' research laid the groundwork for investigative science uncovering the 2001-2004 D.C. Lead Crisis and the 2014-2016 Flint Water Disaster. This talk is presented by the Park Scholarships at NC State, with support from the NCSU Libraries and the College of Sciences and is free and open to the public.

The Problem of “African-American Religion”: A Scholar’s Dilemma

Join us at NC State’s annual Impact of Religion lecture on Thursday, March 30, 2017 at 4:30 p.m. in Bostian Hall, Room 2722 for a presentation by Professor Eddie S. Glaude, Jr. His talk will explore theoretical and practical challenges in the study of African American religion. More specifically, it seeks to examine and trouble assumptions about the role of “African American religion” in black public life — assumptions all too often rooted in a Protestant bias and some static idea of a “black church.” Joseph R. Winters, assistant professor at Duke University, will respond.

NC State's First International Festival to be Held on March 31

The International Festival at NC State will be held on Friday March 31, 2017 from 12:00-4:00 p.m. on Stafford Commons. This event will promote cultural competency and expose students, faculty and staff to new perspectives and traditions from different areas around the world. There will be cultural performances throughout the event, including various forms of creative and artistic expression such as music, dance and poetry. NC State Pow Wow to Be Held for 27th Year on April 1 – All Are Welcome

Join the Native American Student Association (NASA) for the 27th Annual NC State Pow Wow on April 1, 2017 at Carmichael Gym starting at 12:00 p.m. and ending at 7:00 p.m. Pow wows are social gatherings of hundreds of Native Americans who follow dances started centuries ago by their ancestors that continually evolve to include contemporary aspects. These events include feasting, drum music and dance. Come out and enjoy this cultural experience!

Native Education Forum Six-Day Residential Summer Program Invites Applications

Do you know a rising 11th or 12th grade student who identifies as Native American/American Indian? NC State seeks applications for the Native Education Forum on June 18-24, 2017. The event is a six-day residential summer program in which students will live on-campus, get to experience university and campus life, become exposed to a college classroom, interact with American Indian faculty, staff and students and obtain assistance with the college application process. The program is free for those selected to participate. Apply by April 1, 2017.

"Civil Rights in the Age of Trump" with Political Analyst Jamelle Bouie on April 3

The School of Public and International Affairs invites the NC State community to attend "Civil Rights in the Age of Trump" on Monday, April 3, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. in Withers Hall, Room 232. Jamelle Bouie is chief political correspondent for Slate Magazine, where he writes on national politics. He is based in Washington D.C., and his work has appeared in The American Prospect, The Daily Beast, The Atlantic, the Washington Post, the New York Times and the New Yorker online. The event is free and open to the public.

Emerging Scholars Academy Six-Day Residential Summer Program Invites Applications

Do you know a rising 11th grade student who is interested in African American topics? NC State seeks applications for the Emerging Scholars Academy on June 25 - July 1, 2017. The event is a six-day residential academic enrichment program designed for high school students who have a strong interest and appreciation for the African American experience and culture. The program costs only $10 for those selected to participate. Apply by April 15, 2017.

GLBT Center Invites Applications for 2017 Student Leadership Awards

The GLBT Center will relaunch its annual awards for student leadership and activism this spring. The Thomas H. Stafford Leadership Award recognizes a student who has demonstrated service to the GLBT community through peer education, peer mentoring, community building and/or community outreach or service. The Evelyn Q. Reiman Activism Award recognizes a student who has worked to increase awareness about social justice issues, identify strategies for enacting change, engage peers in social justice activism and/or foster collaboration across communities to address campus or community climate concerns. Both awards will be given at Lavender Graduation on Wednesday, April 26 at 7:00 p.m. in the Piedmont-Mountains Ballroom, Talley Student Union. The application deadline is Friday, April 7, 2017 at 5:00 p.m.

The GLBT Center will host its annual Lavender Graduation ceremony on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the Piedmont-Mountains Ballroom, Talley Student Union. Lavender Graduation provides an opportunity to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of 2017 GLBT graduates. All faculty, staff and students are invited to attend. No RSVP is required.

Graduate Student Funding Opportunity with Emphasis on Diversity

The North Carolina Water Resources Research Institute and North Carolina Sea Grant announce a joint funding opportunity for graduate students in North Carolina. They intend to fund up to five projects at $10,000 each. Submissions by and/or collaborative partnerships with underrepresented students and faculty, HBCU's, and minority-serving insitutions are strongly encouraged. Proposals are due on May 1, 2017.

Multicultural Graduation Celebration to Recognize Graduates on May 11

Multicultural Student Affairs will host the Multicultural Graduation Celebration to congratulate graduates in NC State's multicultural community. The event will be held in Witherspoon Cinema on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. with a reception to follow. In December and May of each year, MSA hosts this celebration to allow friends and family to come together to recognize graduates' accomplishments.
