OIED's Assistant Professors' Community Provides Insights
Group facilitates the achievement of professional goals and growth
Since 2006, the Assistant Professors’ Community has served as an informal discussion group open to all NC State faculty, with a special emphasis on issues of importance to assistant professors. The Community meets approximately six times per year to discuss topics related to teaching, research, and faculty life. Often meeting during the lunch hour, the Community provides an informal setting to network with other faculty and discuss issues of common interest to those who are teaching, conducting research, and working toward tenure.
At the most recent Assistant Professors’ Community meeting, held on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 in Park Shops, a friendly and diverse group gathered to hear a panel of recently tenured faculty speak about their experiences working toward tenure and the tenure process. The panelists were: Kofi Boone, Landscape Architecture; Carolyn Bird, 4H Youth Development, Family and Consumer Sciences; Duarte Morais, Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management; Eileen Taylor, Accounting; and Keith Weninger, Physics. Also in attendance was Betsy Brown, Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, who has assisted and mentored many faculty in her roles as administrator, ADVANCE Scholar, faculty member, and author.
Past meeting topics have included; “Juggling Flaming Chainsaws: Work/Life Integration,” “When to Say Yes, How to Say No,” along with pressing topics such as “Best Practices for Professional Success,” “Grant Writing and Initiating Research,” and “Preparing a Dossier.” Dr. Marcia Gumpertz, Assistant Vice Provost for Faculty Diversity in the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity, facilitates the group. The Social Equity Leadership Conference will be held on June 5-7, 2013 at NC State. The conference theme is "Globally Engaged, Locally Responsible: New Challenges for Social Equity." Women's Center Prom Project Drive Now through March 28 |

The Women's Center is partnering with the Pearl's Closet Prom Project to conduct the Prom Project Drive through March 28, 2013. Drop off clean, modern dresses (all sizes), shoes, purses, shawls, and other accessories, as well as men's tuxedos, shoes, and accessories at: NC State Women's Center Harrelson Hall, Room 322 from 8:30AM - 4:30PM. The Center is also seeking students to teach workshops related to healthy relationships, body image, and leadership, etc., to young women in conjunction with this project. Faculty Diversity at NC State
Faculty are the least diverse group on campus, as far as gender and racial/ethnic composition are concerned. Though progress is slow, we are making strides. Hispanic, Black, and Native American faculty have increased from 6% to 8% of the tenured faculty from 2006 to 2012, a group that is particularly important for indicating change, as it represents the campus leadership; and women have increased from 19% to 24%. The number of underrepresented minority department heads has tripled from two in 2006 to six in 2012. The tenure clock extension regulation was revised to explicitly include domestic partners in 2012, and a new policy providing parental leave to graduate students was instituted in May 2012.
