Week of Action: Recognizing Inequity, Practicing Solutions

The GLBT Center will host its second annual Week of Action from Monday, March 27 to Friday, March 31, 2017 with the theme “Recognizing Inequity, Practicing Solutions.” The goals of this week are to help students, faculty and staff understand different ways in which inequity is present within our society and to provide them with strategies and ideas to combat those inequities.

Be Aware: Sexual Assault Awareness Month

The NC State Women's Center will present a full calendar of programs for Sexual Assault Awareness Month, which occurs nationally every April. We encourage you to attend at least one program this month to help stimulate dialogue and consciousness as we focus on this serious issue.

Meet Rachel Banawa, ASIA President

Rachel Banawa is a graduating senior majoring in psychology from Old Bridge, New Jersey. She is president of Asian Students in Alliance (ASIA), a sister of Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., and a mental health ambassador in the Counseling Center. She also dances with Fusion Dance Crew. She has also served on the executive boards for the Asian Students Association and the Multicultural Greek Council.

Multicultural Student Affairs Accepting Applications For Symposium Counselors

Multicultural Student Affairs is now accepting applications from prospective counselors for the annual Symposium for Multicultural Scholars that takes place for new incoming students each August during Wolfpack Welcome Week. Counselors also serve as mentors in the Peer Mentor Program throughout the year.

Women's Center Seeks Assistant Director for Interpersonal Violence Services

The Women's Center invites applications for the assistant director for interpersonal violence services. The position contributes to the overarching mission, vision and goals of the Women’s Center by overseeing the center’s efforts related to campus response and prevention of all forms of interpersonal violence, including sexual assault, relationship violence and stalking. The position reports to the Women’s Center director and is an integral part of the center’s team. The position is a full-time position that directly supervises the rape prevention education coordinator.

Film Screening: The Light in Her Eyes, Extraordinary Portrait of a Leader and Educator

The Muslim Students' Association, in partnership with the Women's Center, is co-sponsoring a screening of the 2011 film The Light in Her Eyes on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. in the Women's Center, Talley Student Union, Room 5210. The film features Houda al-Habash, a conservative Muslim preacher, who founded a Qur’an school for girls in Damascus 30 years ago. Every summer, her female students immerse themselves in a rigorous study of Islam. Shot right before the uprising in Syria erupted, The Light in Her Eyes offers an extraordinary portrait of a leader who challenges the women of her community to live according to Islam, without giving up their dreams.

Student Legal Services Provides Immigration Services for All Students

University Student Legal Services (USLS) provides education, advice and representation within the scope of the prepaid student legal services plan. USLS services are free to currently enrolled NC State students who have paid student fees. DACA representation is especially timely in light of recent immigration developments.

GLBT Center to Host Workshop on Privilege on March 29

We all have multiple identities that impact the way we view the world and the way we are viewed by others. Our lived experiences differ based on what our identities are: our race, ethnicity, age, socioeconomic class, sex, religious/spiritual affiliation (or lack thereof), ability status, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, veteran status, nationality, immigration status, etc. Some of our identities make it easier for us to be accepted and successful in our society, while other identities make it more difficult.

As part of the lineup of workshops for the 2016-2017 GLBT Advocate Program, the GLBT Center will host a “Sitting with Privilege” workshop on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. in Talley Student Union, Room 4280. This two-hour workshop is open to NC State undergraduates, graduate students, staff, faculty and alumni as well as interested members of the local community. The workshop will help participants critically examine the impact of their identities on their experiences, recognize the barriers they may (or may not) face depending on their identities, identify common behaviors that can perpetuate barriers for others, and explore ways to use their access and opportunity to create space for others.

Host an International Student at Your Spring Holiday with Global Homestay Program

The Global Training Initiative's Holiday Homestay Program provides international visiting students at NC State an opportunity to experience American traditions during the spring holiday. Local families, faculty, staff, alumni, and students are encouraged to sign up as hosts. Applications are due by March 29, 2017.

The Problem of “African-American Religion”: A Scholar’s Dilemma

Join us at NC State’s annual Impact of Religion lecture on Thursday, March 30, 2017 at 4:30 p.m. in Bostian Hall, Room 2722 for a presentation by Professor Eddie S. Glaude, Jr. His talk will explore theoretical and practical challenges in the study of African American religion. More specifically, it seeks to examine and trouble assumptions about the role of “African American religion” in black public life — assumptions all too often rooted in a Protestant bias and some static idea of a “black church.” Joseph R. Winters, assistant professor at Duke University, will respond.

NC State's First International Festival to be Held on March 31

Join us for the International Festival, sponsored by Student Involvement, Student Government, Multicultural Student Affairs and the Office of International Services on Friday March 31, 2017 from 12:00-4:00 p.m. This event will promote cultural competency for students, faculty and staff and bring new perspectives and traditions from around the world. College Explosion Event to be held in Witherspoon on April 1, Volunteers Needed

College Explosion is an all-day event where NC State students host underresourced high school students on campus for a tour and to motivate them to think about how to make college a part of their future. The event will be hosted on April 1, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Students interested in volunteering can sign up for hour-long shifts or the entire day.

NC State Pow Wow to Be Held for 27th Year on April 1 – All Are Welcome

Join the Native American Student Association (NASA) for the 27th Annual NC State Pow Wow on April 1, 2017 at Carmichael Gym starting at 12:00 p.m. and ending at 7:00 p.m. Pow wows are social gatherings of hundreds of Native Americans who follow dances started centuries ago by their ancestors that continually evolve to include contemporary aspects. These events include feasting, drum music and dance. Come out and enjoy this cultural experience!

Native Education Forum Six-Day Residential Summer Program Invites Applications

Do you know a rising 11th or 12th grade student who identifies as Native American/American Indian? NC State seeks applications for the Native Education Forum on June 18-24, 2017. The event is a six-day residential summer program in which students will live on-campus, get to experience university and campus life, become exposed to a college classroom, interact with American Indian faculty, staff and students and obtain assistance with the college application process. The program is free for those selected to participate. Apply by April 1, 2017.

GLBT Center Invites Applications for 2017 Student Leadership Awards

The GLBT Center will relaunch its annual awards for student leadership and activism this spring. The Thomas H. Stafford Leadership Award recognizes a student who has demonstrated service to the GLBT community through peer education, peer mentoring, community building and/or community outreach or service. The Evelyn Q. Reiman Activism Award recognizes a student who has worked to increase awareness about social justice issues, identify strategies for enacting change, engage peers in social justice activism and/or foster collaboration across communities to address campus or community climate concerns. Both awards will be given at Lavender Graduation on Wednesday, April 26 at 7:00 p.m. in the Piedmont-Mountains Ballroom, Talley Student Union. The application deadline is Friday, April 7, 2017 at 5:00 p.m.

Young Women Invited to Sixth Annual Sonia Kovalevsky Day for Mathematics

The Association for Women in Mathematics Student Chapter at NC State is hosting its 6th Annual Sonia Kovalevsky Day on the morning of Saturday, April 8, 2017. The event will involve mathematically-oriented games and workshops led by current math graduate students. We will conclude with a keynote address by Dr. Cynthia Vinzant, a faculty member in mathematics. The event for 7th and 8th grade girls and is free. The deadline for registration is Monday, April 3, 2017.

"Civil Rights in the Age of Trump" with Political Analyst Jamelle Bouie on April 3

The School of Public and International Affairs invites the NC State community to attend "Civil Rights in the Age of Trump" on Monday, April 3, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. in Withers Hall, Room 232. Jamelle Bouie is chief political correspondent for Slate Magazine, where he writes on national politics. He is based in Washington D.C., and his work has appeared in The American Prospect, The Daily Beast, The Atlantic, the Washington Post, the New York Times and the New Yorker online. The event is free and open to the public.

Motivational Speaker Keith Pogues to Speak at Dinner Reception in Poole on April 11

Poole Office of Undergraduate Programs in collaboration with the Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA), the Black Business Student Association (BBSA) and the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA), will host motivational speaker Keith Pigues for a dinner reception and keynote address on April 11, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. in the Nelson Hall Boardroom. Pogues' inspirational yet challenging delivery invites audiences to reimagine what is possible both professionally and personally. He will speak on the differences between leading and managing, relationship building and career success.

Emerging Scholars Academy Six-Day Residential Summer Program Invites Applications

Do you know a rising 11th grade student who is interested in African American topics? NC State seeks applications for the Emerging Scholars Academy on June 25 - July 1, 2017. The event is a six-day residential academic enrichment program designed for high school students who have a strong interest and appreciation for the African American experience and culture. The program costs only $10 for those selected to participate. Apply by April 15, 2017.

The GLBT Center will host its annual Lavender Graduation ceremony on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the Piedmont-Mountains Ballroom, Talley Student Union. Lavender Graduation provides an opportunity to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of 2017 GLBT graduates. All faculty, staff and students are invited to attend. No RSVP is required.

Graduate Student Funding Opportunity with Emphasis on Diversity

The North Carolina Water Resources Research Institute and North Carolina Sea Grant announce a joint funding opportunity for graduate students in North Carolina. They intend to fund up to five projects at $10,000 each. Submissions by and/or collaborative partnerships with underrepresented students and faculty, HBCU's, and minority-serving institutions are strongly encouraged. Proposals are due on May 1, 2017.

Multicultural Graduation Celebration to Recognize Graduates on May 11

Multicultural Student Affairs will host the Multicultural Graduation Celebration to congratulate graduates in NC State's multicultural community. The event will be held in Witherspoon Cinema on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. with a reception to follow. In December and May of each year, MSA hosts this celebration to allow friends and family to come together to recognize graduates' accomplishments.
