Dr. Monica Leach Accepts Position at NC Central

The Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity bids a fond farewell to Dr. Monica Leach, who will be leaving NC State this month to accept the position of associate vice chancellor for Enrollment Management at North Carolina Central University.

Dr. Leach has served NC State for nearly 18 years in many capacities, holding the positions of assistant dean for academic affairs and director of diversity programs in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, assistant vice provost for Enrollment Management, and tenured professor and interim department head in the Department of Social Work. In 2004, Dr. Leach won the John R. Larkins Award, one of North Carolina's highest honors for human service that is given to a state government employee who has made noteworthy and exemplary contributions to human and race relations in the workplace or community. She was the first employee from a state college or university to win the award.

Since the formation of the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity in 2011, Dr. Leach has served as an OIED Faculty Diversity Liaison, co-founding NC State's National Diversity Advisory Board of distinguished alumni and friends of the University who provide external guidance on diversity initiatives and practices at NC State. She will continue to serve as a member of the Board.

Dr. Leach stated, "My connection with OIED has always sustained and enhanced my work at NC State. The progress we have made is due in large part to the tireless commitment to diversity and inclusion of many. I'm just fortunate I was able to be part of it."

Dr. Leach will be greatly missed for her warmth and wit. We wish her continued success in all her endeavors.

La Toya Hankins: Meet the Author Lunch and Learn

On Thursday, April 3, 2014 at 12:00PM in the D.H. Hill Assembly Room (2nd Floor, East Wing), North Carolina author La Toya Hankins will discuss her recent novel, K-Rho: The Sweet Taste of Sisterhood, which addresses sorority life and sexual identity through an African-American and Southern-centered lens. This event, part of the North Carolina Literary Festival, is co-presented by NC State's GLBT Center and is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided.

Moving Diversity Forward in Higher Education: NC-DIP Spring Networking Event

Register now for the 2014 Spring Networking Event on April 4, 2014 at the Cone Center on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The 2014 Networking Event will provide an opportunity for diversity professionals, scholars, and practitioners to engage with and hear from chief diversity officers in North Carolina on promising practices, lived experiences, and career mapping. BRIDGES, an intensive professional development program for women in higher education who seek to gain or strengthen their academic leadership capabilities, has opened its 2014 application period. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) in the United States. During the month, activists raise awareness about sexual violence and educate communities and individuals on how to prevent it.

In the 1970's, the Take Back the Night marches began in England. Initially led by and for women, the marches spread to large U.S. cities and eventually nationally across the U.S. Expanding to include men and men’s participation in ending sexual violence, the events became part of a week-long designation to draw attention to sexual violence issues. In 2001, the National Sexual Violence Resource Center polled state and local organizations and designated the entire month of April as well as the color teal to promote national unity in the fight against sexual violence.

Lunch and Learn: The Psychology of Modern Day Slavery

The Women's Center and the African American Cultural Center jointly invite you to attend a Lunch and Learn on Friday, April 11, 2014 from 12:00PM-2:00PM in Witherspoon Student Center, Room 356. The Psychology of Modern Day Slavery is a short documentary film created by the American Psychological Association's Society for the Psychology of Women (Division 35). Feminist psychologists discuss the socio-historical, cultural, and psychological factors that have driven the proliferation of human trafficking. This documentary also includes survivor testimony of women from the United States, Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Viewing of the film will be followed by a guided discussion and action steps. The Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity (OIED) and the University Diversity Advisory Committee are seeking nominations for the 8th annual diversity awards, which will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at 11:00AM in the Talley Student Center Ballroom. The Chancellor's Creating Community Awards recognizes faculty, staff, colleges, students, and student organizations that have made exceptional efforts and contributions in the areas of equity, diversity, and inclusion. Equal Pay Day is April 8th

Tuesday, April 8, 2014 marks Equal Pay Day. This date represents how far into 2014 women must work to earn what men earned in 2013. Join Equal Opportunity & Equity and the Women's Center in a series of activities commemorating Equal Pay Day and highlighting the need for pay equity.
