Chancellor's Creating Community Awards:
2014 Winners Announced

Five Diversity Awards Given at
Annual Awards Ceremony

The Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity hosted the Chancellor's Creating Community Awards on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 in the new Talley Ballroom. The annual Awards recognizes faculty, staff, colleges, students, and student organizations that have made exceptional efforts and contributions in the areas of equity, diversity, and inclusion. Nominations were collected from the NC State community in an open nomination process conducted by OIED's Diversity and Inclusion unit starting in February. The faculty and staff winners received cash awards of $500 with matching awards for their departments. The college winner received $1,000 in discretionary funds. Student and Student Organization winners also received $500.

Ms. Liz Moran's nomination included the following: "To enhance the diversity experiences, quality of teaching and learning about diversity, Liz Moran redesigned T 101 - Introduction to the College of Textiles... This course now includes assignments to help students understand the importance of cultural competence and inclusive practices."

The nomination for the College of Education included the following: "The College of Education defines and emphasizes a community that supports and respects diverse peoples and populations, and continues its legacy of preparing high caliber students for the diverse and ever-changing landscape of education across the state and beyond. Its Council on Multicultural Initiatives and Diversity (COMID) is at the heart of the college’s efforts to maintain a focus on diversity."

Veronica Mbaneme's nomination included the following: "Veronica is committed to diversity in STEM and has a long history of engagement in recruitment and retention of minority students in STEM beginning as an undergraduate student at NC State to her current status as a doctoral student in Biological and Agricultural Engineering."

  • Kappa Omicron Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (Winner)
  • Women of Welch (WOW) Village 

The nominataion of the Kappa Omicron Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha included the following: "As a service sorority, they devote their talents and resources to various initiatives, which are: emerging young leaders, environmental stewardship and sustainability, asthma prevention and management, health, global poverty, economic security, social justice and human rights. This year, the Chapter hosted a broad range of programs and initiatives that connect with diversity awareness, inclusion and equity."

We encourage you to nominate deserving candidates for these awards so that efforts in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion will be given the recognition they deserve.
