Dr. Ashley Simons-Rudolph Selected for Workshop

Dr. Ashley Simons-Rudolph has been selected to participate in a four-day workshop entitled, The Entrepreneurial Mindset — Maximizing Faculty Impact. Affectionately called “Entrepreneurship Bootcamp," this workshop helps faculty and EPA non-faculty researchers acquire the business acumen to enhance the programs, services, and products produced on campus. Led by a team of faculty and entrepreneurs from the UNC-Chapel Hill College of Arts and Sciences’ Entrepreneurship minor, the Boot Camp will provide skill development on: identifying opportunity, developing a strategy, selling the idea, writing a plan, calculating costs, raising money, developing goals, and assessing progress toward meeting those goals. As Director of the Women’s Center, Dr. Simons-Rudolph will use the training to leverage the current strengths of the Women’s Center and explore modicums of profitability, recoup development costs, and provide seed funding for future gender equity endeavors. UNC-CH will host the bootcamp May 12-15, 2014on UNC-CH campus with 28 participants representing 11 institutions in the UNC System.

Opening Doors Workshop

Opening Doors is a three-day retreat that provides a framework for increasing diversity awareness, enhancing a person's ability to create an inclusive organization, and facilitating personal and professional growth. The next session will be held September 10-12, 2014. Opening Doors is open and free to all county-based, off-campus, and campus-based faculty and staff within CALS. Through a partnership with the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity, several seats are also reserved for NC State employees who are not in CALS. The workshop is absolutely free and includes all meals, lodging, and educational materials. Register online. Please direct questions to LaTosha Bradley.

Award-Winning Program
Celebrates 15th Year

Congratulations to our 2013-14 Equal Opportunity Institute (EOI) graduates. April 24, 2014 marked the graduaton of the15th EOI class. Fifty-eight faculty, staff, and students each participated in at least 20 hours of workshops on topics focusing on equal opportunity and diversity. The program ran from September through April with participants completing individual plans of coursework based on personalized goals. Participants finished the program by submitting a final reflection journal summarizing the knowledge and skill gained through participation in the EOI. Comments from participants included:

“I must admit, I learned way more than I had planned on learning.”

“Beyond my initial goals to accept viewpoints I would normally dismiss immediately, I have learned to go far beyond this. I have learned to treat people fairly, accept different opinions and judgments, and see beyond the surface layer.”

“The workshops have taught me to see a particular situation and analyze it from different angles.”

“As a result of EOI, I have learned better ways to address situations between coworkers, as well as valuable resources to which I can direct students when needed.”

“The number one new skill I have gained is confidence. I have the confidence to be a leader against oppression and discrimination.”

Dr. RaJade Berry-James, associate professor in the School of International and Public Affairs and OIED faculty liaison, shared motivating comments with graduates. Graduates each received a framed certificate and a special gift. Student participants received cords to wear at their NC State University graduation ceremonies. Special Recognition Graduates (participants who completed more than 29 hours of workshops) were recognized with special seals on their certificates. The program also recognized Graduate Scholars, who are EOI Graduates who returned to continue their learning about equity and diversity.

On May 12, 2014 from 10:00AM to 4:00PM at the Friday Institute on NC State's Centennial Campus, the Charting Your Path Workshop will focus on strategies for success for mid-career faculty, with particular emphasis on approaches for women and underrepresented minority faculty. Deborah DeZure, Assistant Provost for Faculty and Organizational Development, Michigan State University, will be the keynote speaker. Deborah DeZure, Roger Baldwin, and their research team at MSU were recipients of the 2007 Robert Menges Award for Outstanding Research in Faculty Development for their “Study of Mid Career Faculty: Implications for Practice” by the Professional and Organizational Development Network (POD) in Higher Education. The study appeared in Change (September/October 2008). In 2009, DeZure and her MSU colleagues Cindi Young and Allyn Shaw won the 2009 POD Innovation Award for a Mid-Career Faculty Orientation – “From Associate Professor to Professor: Productive Decision-Making at Mid-Career.” At the workshop, mid-career faculty will learn strategies for planning their career path to full professor. Administrators (department heads, directors and deans) will gain insights into how to facilitate mid-career faculty success. For more information and to register, please see the website.

Giving B(l)ack: Demystifying the Philanthropic Highway National Conference , will be hosted by the NC State African American Cultural Center from June 19-22, 2014 to engage a variety of givers, change agents, practitioners, concerned citizens, and researchers to think more strategically about how to utilize individual and collective giving to enhance the impact of their multiple community building and change efforts. Please join us for this important conference.
