NC State to Survey Students on Sexual Violence

During the spring 2018 semester, the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity and the Office of Institutional Research and Planning will distribute a campus-wide student survey to collect information and opinions related to the incidences of sexual violence and sexual misconduct.

Qwen Ballard: Advancing the Black Male Initiative

Qwen Ballard will receive his master's degree in higher education administration on Saturday. He also earned his B.A. in business and marketing education with a concentration in entrepreneurship at NC State. He has held the position of program coordinator of the Black Male Initiative, has been active with the Higher Education Association and is originally from Wilson, NC.

Feminist 5K to Benefit Women's Center of Wake County on June 17 - Registering Now

Join us on June 17, 2017 for the Feminist 5K at Chavis Park in Raleigh for a 5K to benefit the Women's Center of Wake County. Early registration is $25. After May 17, 2017, the price increases to $30. Kids 12 and under register free with an adult registration.

GLBT Center Student Survey Now Live – Provide Your Feedback to the GLBT Center

The 2016-2017 GLBT Center Student Survey is now live! Each year, we invite our students to give us feedback to help us assess how well we're meeting our goals. You'll be asked to share demographic info (so we know the range of identities of the students we're serving), indicate how many of our workshops and events you've attended, share which of our student organizations you've participated in and note which of our resources and services you've used. We will also ask questions to assess what the campus climate is like for you. We welcome suggestions for improvements! The entire survey should take about 15 minutes.

North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences Opens Exhibit on "Race: Are We So Different?"

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences has opened a new traveling exhibit that will be free and open to the public through October 22, 2017. The exhibit looks at race through the lens of science, history and personal experiences to promote a better understanding of human variation. Explore the interactive exhibit components, historical artifacts, iconic objects, compelling photographs, multimedia presentations and attractive graphic displays that offer visitors an eye-opening look at its important subject matter. The exhibit tells the stories of race from biological, cultural and historical points of view. Combining these perspectives offers an unprecedented look at race and racism in the United States.

Summer II Course – AFST 344: Leadership in African American Communities

This course is designed to be a seminar examining the leadership experiences, challenges and opportunities facing the African American community presently, historically and in the future. In this seminar, we will interrogate definitions, literature, theory, accomplishments and "representations" of leadership in the African American community. While the course was designed with these objectives in mind, in many ways, it is an uncharted exploration for both students and the professor to question the existing conditions of African American leadership in society. This is an online course with live online sessions using Blackboard, 4:30-6:00 p.m., Thursdays, for five weeks.

Summer II Course – WGS 210: Women & Gender & Science & Technology

This course provides an interdisciplinary introduction to the relationship between cultural beliefs about science and dominant paradigms of sex and gender. We will place special emphasis on the social contexts of scientific research. Readings stretch from 17th century poetry to 21st century scholarship on the current state of women in STEM, challenging students to take long views of both science and gender. Summer II Course – WGS 293: Gender and the Social Construction of Sexuality

This interdisciplinary course will investigate how gender and sexuality are defined and informed by the world in which we live. Through an immersive exploration of history, literature, religion, art, music and even food, we'll dissect the cultural "norms" that construct society. Utilizing new social media, we'll then examine the manner in which we perform and perpetuate these social constructions and discuss how the personal is still political in the Internet age. Some of the topics we will cover include gender roles, heteronormativity and LGBTQ issues, sexual scripts and consent and sexing the body. Particular focus will be on minority populations and those with multiple intersecting identities (e.g. race/ethnicity, class, gender identity, sexual orientation).

Women's Center Summer Book Club Now Forming; Help Select the Book

The Women's Center will begin another book club for the summer from May 23 - June 29, 2017 (6 weeks). Those interested in participating will help select the book, which will be provided courtesy of the Women's Center. The club is open to all community members but the opportunity is limited to the first 20 participants who register.

Families of Kids with Special Needs Support Group to Meet on May 24

The Families of Kids with Special Needs support group invites the NC State community to attend our upcoming brown bag lunch meeting on May 24 in Tompkins 131B. We will share strategies/stories and provide support and resources with each other. We will continue to invite speakers from the greater community and university. In past meetings, we have had visitors from Wake County public school system, Autism Society and Family Medical Leave officials from the NC State's Benefits Office.
