African American Cultural Center to Screen Documentary Soul Food Junkies on June 20

Food traditions are hard to change, especially when they're passed on from generation to generation. In this PBS documentary, award-winning filmmaker Byron Hurt shares his journey to learn more about the African American Cuisine known a soul food.

Baffled by his dad's unwillingness to change his traditional soul food diet in the face of a health crisis, Hurt set out to learn more about this rich culinary tradition and its relevance to black cultural identity. He discovered that the love affair that his dad and his community have with soul food is deep-rooted, complex, and in some tragic cases, deadly.

The African American Cultural Center invites you to a screening of the film Soul Food Junkies on June 20, 2017 at 7:15 p.m. in Witherspoon Cinema followed by Q&A with the filmmaker. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public and is presented in partnership with the Jamie Kirk Hahn Foundation.

Global Training Initiative Seeks Dinner Hosts for International Student Advisers on June 29

NC State and other NC partners (Duke, Wake Tech and UNCW) will host a distinguished group of 24 international student advisers from all over the world for a one-week study program. GTI is arranging a home-stay evening with families who have hosted international students in the past to provide an authentic American home experience and meal for the advisers (perhaps a first for them) and to be able to describe to their students what to expect if they were to participate in such an experience one day. These are mid-career professionals with a variety of backgrounds and experiences that could make for a very engaging evening of conversation and cultural exchange.

If you are interested and able to host 2 program participants on Thursday, June 29, 2017, please send a message to Becky Cibulskis, including a contact phone number and whether you are able/experienced in cooking to accommodate vegetarian, halal or other dietary restrictions.

College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Offers Opening Doors 2017 Retreat

In collaboration with the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity, CALS is pleased to offer its 8th annual Opening Doors, a three-day retreat that provides a framework for increasing diversity awareness and enhances a person’s ability to create an inclusive organization. The overall goal of Opening Doors is to facilitate both personal growth and systemic organizational change.

Opening Doors is open and free to all NC State faculty and staff. The format of the retreat provides for open discussion, self-examination and an objective analysis of our social system as well as a constructive means to bridge differences through understanding personal responsibility.

This year's Opening Doors retreat is scheduled for October 4-6, 2017 at the Eastern 4-H Center in Columbia, NC. The retreat is free for all NC State employees and close affiliates. Meals and lodging are included. Outside organizations are welcome to join for a fee of $500 for non-profit agency employees and $700 for private industry business employees. If two or more participants are interested in driving a state-provided van, transportation will also be provided from the NC State Brickhaven location to the Eastern 4-H Center and back.
