OIED Gears Up for 2013-14 at New Student Orientation

Student Centers Greet Incoming Students at Information Fair

The bright and lively atmosphere of the New Student Orientation Information Fair this year is no different from previous years, despite its temporary relocation to Witherspoon Student Center. In the midst of the highly anticipated Talley Center renovations, the Fair is taking place this year in the Washington Sankofa Room on the first floor of Witherspoon, which is also the home of NC State’s African American Cultural Center (a unit of OIED) on the second and third floors. The Information Fair is a perennial draw with its many booths, tables, and animated conversations.

Traditionally opened to students on the afternoon of the first day of every two-day orientation session throughout late June and July, the Information Fair gives student organizations, as well as NC State offices and departments directly serving students, an opportunity to meet, greet, and welcome new students. Groups as wide-ranging as Public Safety to Student Government each have a display, materials, giveaways, and most importantly, staff members, many of whom are students themselves, to provide information and answer questions about the organizations.

At this year’s Fair, the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity was represented by the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender (GLBT) Center, Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA), and the Women’s Center. Staff members engaged with countless students to let them know of the many programs and services, the vast majority of which are free to NC State students and staff, offered by these centers. Look for information here in the Diversity Digest throughout the year about upcoming programs.

In addition to a rich variety of educational programming, service projects, helpful assistance, and useful resources, these organizations offer opportunities for friendship and networking that extend well beyond NC State.
