Multicultural Student Affairs Presents Student Symposia

Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA) presents its Symposia for new students during the month of August before classes begin. Symposia are one-and-a-half day seminars open to all new students but particularly for African American, Hispanic/ Latino, and Native American first year students. Proven to improve retention and graduation rates among these historically at-risk groups, Symposia offers community, encouragement, support, and numerous connections and resources for students, not to mention lifelong friendships.

OIED & Women's Center Receive Rape Prevention and Education Grant

The NC State Women’s Center and the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity were awarded a $10,000 Rape Prevention and Education Program Grant by the NC State University Foundation, Inc. The purpose of the grant program is to support special initiatives that enhance the quality of the student experience at NC State. The Women’s Center and OIED proposed to provide education to all incoming students about the definitions and prevalence of rape and sexual assault, understanding of consent, strategies for supporting survivors, reducing victim blame and intervening in potentially violent situations, as well as information about campus and community resources. Work will begin in fall 2013. Congratulations to Jenn Scott, Ashley Simons-Rudolph, Amy Circosta, and the OIED/Women’s Center team for their successful submission.

OIED is pleased to announce the following Signature Events for Fall 2013. While OIED units host well over 100 events thoughtout the year, our Signature Events are those that may be of interest to a majority of the NC State community. Most are free and open to the public. We hope you will attend.

Around Campus

Opening Doors Workshop

Opening Doors is a three-day retreat that provides a framework for increasing diversity awareness and enhances a person’s ability to create an inclusive organization. The format of Opening Doors provides for open discussion, self-examination and objective analysis. The overall goal of Opening Doors is to facilitate both personal growth and systemic organizational change. Opening Doors sessions are held at the Eastern 4-H Center. The next session will be held on September 25-27, 2013. The workshop is absolutely free and includes all meals and lodging. For registration, please see the CALS website.
