African American Cultural Center's Annual Harambee

Special Commemorations to Be Held at this Year's Event

From the Swahili language, Harambee means "let us come together." The African American Cultural Center's annual Harambee celebration provides an opportunity for the community to join together at the start of the academic year. The Cultural Center welcomes the entire campus community to experience this unique celebration of unity and fellowship on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in Witherspoon Student Center's Washington Sankofa Room.

This year, the Center's programming will have three anniversaries as its focus: Brown v. Board of Education (60 years later), the NC State African American Student Advisory Council (25 years) and the NC State Black Alumni Society (35 years). Celebrating education, the AACC will honor two NC State alumni and public school teachers: April Gaddy and Alexis Teasdell, in addition to past AASAC chairs. Look for a variety of programs and events that will explore the importance of the 2014-2015 Theme: Brown v Board: Educational Empowerment through Replicating Systematic Practices that Work. The Call of the Drum ('Djembe") will be performed by students from the African Student Union. Uninhibited Praise Gospel Choir will also perform.

Students at Peer Mentor Program Convocation 2014

On Monday, August 25, 2014, NC State's Peer Mentor Program held its annual Convocation, where new student mentors, returning mentors, and new mentees gathered in Talley Student Union to get to know one another and embark on mentoring relationships that for many will endure not only as an immensely helpful benefit during the undergraduate years but as lifelong friendships.

This year, 128 mentors and 113 new mentees were matched after a dinner of pizza and introductory information from the staff of Multicultural Student Affairs (Multicultural Affairs Assistant Director Nelson Santiago pictured above). We wish all students a successful year.
