C. Ellen Washington, Assistant Director for Leadership and Scholar in Residence

Dr. C. Ellen Washington is the new Assistant Director of Leadership Development and Scholar in Residence at the NC State Women's Center. In her current role as Assistant Director, she provides leadership for sustainability and growth of the Chancellor’s First Year Leadership Program. Dr. Washington offers significant experience in academic leadership, women in leadership, higher educational learning models, strategic planning, and organizational development.

Previously, she served six years as Chair of the Department of Psychology and Chair of the IRB Committee at Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh, NC. C. Ellen is currently enrolled in the OURS Fellowship at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology and will receive a Post-Doc Certificate in Academic Leadership.

Her current research interests are innovative and creative educational models such as MOOCs and other blended learning formats. She is also an avid proponent for diversity in the workplace, and leadership and social competencies. Dr. Washington has published articles in the Oxford University Public Policy Journal and the International Journal of Business and Social Science. She presented this work at Oxford University Roundtable in 2010 and the London’s Women’s Leadership Symposium in 2012 in the UK. She is currently working to develop her dissertation into a toolkit for mentoring and women in the academy. She recently completed Leadership Raleigh, and is pursuing a Post-Doc in Academic Leadership. She is an active member of APA (American Psychological Association), SIOP (Society of Industrial/ Organizational Psychology), NAIM (National Association of IRB Managers), AABHE (American Association for Blacks in Higher Education), AAUW (American Association of University Women), and YPN (Young Professionals Network of Raleigh).

RSVP Training Opportunity

The Relationship and Sexual Violence Phone (RSVP) line is a 24/7/365 hotline available to anyone impacted by dating violence, sexual assault, rape, stalking or other form of gender based violence. The hotline is staffed by trained advocates who are members of the NC State University community. Advocates provide callers with emotional support and information about their rights, options and resources. All calls are confidential.

Advocates must complete the 18-hour in-person training prior to answering calls. Training is offered in both the Fall and Spring semesters, and is open to all NC State students, faculty, and staff.

Pack's P.A.C.T. Gathering

To foster and maintain campus unity among African American males, Pack's P.A.C.T. is sponsoring the inaugural "Gathering of Men" program on Tuesday, September 10, 2013, 5:30PM-7:00PM, Riddick Hall Lobby. This event provides an opportunity for students to network and fellowship with each other and African American faculty and staff. The relationships forged with faculty/staff provide students with on-going support in the areas of personal, professional, and leadership development. Co-director Thomas Easley states, "We would love to see our African American faculty, staff, and students turn out for this event to start a strong second year for the program."

"A Bite of Chinese" at the Confucius Institute

Have you ever wanted to learn about Chinese culture, learn basic Chinese phrases, or be able to better communicate with your Chinese friends? The Confucius Institute is offering a lunchtime course specifically designed for NC State staff and faculty Thursdays, Sep 10- Nov 12, 2013 (8 sessions - no class Oct 8 and Oct 15), 12:00- 1:00 PM, First Year College, Room 304. Could art change the world? What about worldview?

On Thursday, September 5, 2013, a global art project that seeks to transform messages of personal identity into works of art is coming to the NC State Brickyard.

Inside Out 11M photography project, Washington, D.C.

Inside Out 11M is a nationwide participatory art initiative aimed at creating a portrait of America that includes immigrants and the descendants of immigrants. About 11 million undocumented immigrants live in the U.S. These portraits remind us that behind the numbers are real human stories.

Inside Out 11M aims to start a conversation about immigration and immigration reform. Its photobooth trucks travel in cities across the country, and people in any city can add their faces to this portrait of America to create their own installations. We welcome the entire NC State community to join us on Thursday, September 5, 2013 in the Brickyard to take part in the NC State installation.

The Peer Mentor Program
Kicks Off Another Year

As the fall semester begins, the Department of Multicultural Student Affairs marks the 32nd year of connecting first year students with upperclass students through the Peer Mentor Program (PMP). PMP serves to aid new students in the academic, emotional, and socio-cultural adjustment to college life at NC State. The peer mentoring relationship is designed to foster a network of support for culturally diverse first-year students. Mentors serve as peer support personnel for their mentees and share program goals and responsibilities aimed at ensuring the retention and graduation of these particular student groups.

There are several upcoming events for the program including the Mix & Match: Annual Convocation and the PMP Cookout. The Mix & Match: Annual Convocation will be held on Friday, September 6, 2013 at 4PM in the Witherspoon Student Center, Room 126 (Washington Sankofa Room). This event serves as an opportunity to welcome our student mentor and mentee participants for the new academic year. Faculty and staff are welcome. Additionally, the annual PMP Cookout for student participants will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 4PM at Tucker/Owen Beach.

Building Future Faculty Informational Meetings

Learn how departments can most effectively use the Building Future Faculty (BFF) program to scout out potential future faculty from underrepresented groups and bring interesting scholars to visit your department. Find out about the aims of the BFF program, the process for selecting participants, and information about how departments have used the program.

Yousry Azmy, Head of Nuclear Engineering, and Ellen Vasu, Head of Curriculum, Instruction, and Counselor Education, will be on hand to discuss their experiences and ideas about how to use the BFF program. 2nd Annual UNC Hispanic/ Latino Faculty Forum

In an effort to the bring light to faculty recruitment and retention, campus climate, and collaboration among Hispanic Faculty in the UNC System, the annual Hispanic/Latino Faculty Forum was established in 2012. The annual event, hosted by NC State last year, brings together representatives from all UNC sister institutions and rotates among the UNC campuses. This year, UNC Wilmington will host the second annual forum on September 13-14, 2013. The forum is open to all faculty, including those whose areas of research are tied to Hispanic studies, and/or Hispanic population. Please see the website to register.
