Diversity Programs and Initiatives

NC State builds strength from the variety of perspectives and experiences of our community. The Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity advocates for equity, diversity and inclusiveness as critical components in our work to transform both local and global communities. We strive to be a champion of diversity and inclusion efforts so that all members of the community feel welcomed and supported, and the dignity of all people is respected and valued.

Building Future Faculty Program

The NC State University Building Future Faculty (BFF) Program is a two-and-half day all-expenses paid workshop for doctoral students and post-doctoral scholars who are interested in pursuing academic careers and who are committed to promoting diversity in higher education. The program is targeted to graduate students who are in the dissertation phase or post-doctoral.

Chancellor's Creating Community Awards

The Chancellor’s Creating Community Awards are coordinated annually by the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity. They recognize outstanding faculty, staff, colleges, students and student organizations that have made exceptional efforts and contributions in the areas of equity, diversity and inclusion.

Diversity Education for our Peers to THrive (DEPTH Peer Educator) Program

The DEPTH (Diversity Education for our Peers to THrive) program is a student initiative dedicated to facilitating conversations among the student body about various issues of diversity, prominent and emerging social issues and complex problems. DEPTH peer educators guide developmental and productive dialogue workshops and training on issues regarding diversity, inclusion and social justice.

Diversity Education Week & Campus Diversity Dialogues

Held annually every October, Diversity Education Week (DEW) provides education and engagement for NC State students, faculty and staff, promotes awareness, understanding and respect of diverse cultures and enhances constructive leadership and dialogue.

Diversity Mini-Grant Program

NC State is committed to creating and improving efforts to make our campus a diverse and inclusive community. To support these efforts, the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity sponsors the Diversity Mini-Grant Program, aimed to support the development and implementation of diversity and inclusion initiatives and research projects that further the academic mission of the university.

ECD 225 Course: Foundations of Cultural Competence

Cultural competency among 21st-century graduates has become imperative as the job market globalizes and the workforce continues to diversify. To become responsible, productive citizens, our students must understand their own cultures and those of their neighbors at home and afar. This course satisfies the undergraduate U.S. Diversity requirement of the General Education Program (GEP).

Interfaith Prayer and Meditation Spaces

NC State’s interfaith prayer and meditation rooms serve and support all students and the holistic wellness of the university community, as scientific evidence demonstrates significant cognitive and physiological benefits of meditation. The spaces allow individuals of all religious faiths and non-religious beliefs to experience a place for peace, prayer, meditation and/or reflection throughout the day.

For Students

The focus of NC State’s student diversity efforts in the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity (OIED) is to provide leadership in the university’s efforts to coordinate, implement and facilitate a comprehensive array of educational and cultural programs to serve our diverse student body. In addition, student diversity efforts promote cultural competence, cultural interaction as well as an understanding of and appreciation for diversity throughout the entire university community. Student diversity activities include providing consultation on student recruitment, retention and success as well as reviewing and recommending changes to university policies, procedures and regulations to enhance inclusion and promote diversity in the student population.

For Staff

NC State staff are the backbone of the university, supporting vital services and functions including laboratory preparation, student advisement, facilities maintenance and administrative processes. The Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity supports several initiatives and programs aimed to support and engage diverse staff.
