TRANSGENDER AWARENESS WEEK 2016

The GLBT Center will observe Transgender Awareness Week from Monday, November 14 through Friday, November 18, 2016. Be sure to take a look at the educational and thought-provoking programs planned for this year’s observance.

Transgender Awareness Week precedes the Transgender Day of Remembrance on Sunday, November 20, 2016, a global, annual observance for transgender individuals who were murdered over the past year.

MONDAY NOVEMBER 14

Cultural Values about Gender and Violence in the Trans Community Workshop

Time:  9:00-11:00 a.m.
Location: Talley 4280

While there has been increasing attention in the mainstream media about GLBT issues, the issues faced by members of the transgender community have been noticeably absent from the national conversation. This two-hour workshop explores the cultural values that contribute to a climate of interpersonal, social and institutional discrimination, oppression, and violence in the trans community.

Cruel and Unusual (2006) Film Screening and Discussion

Time:  7:00-9:00 p.m.
Location:  Talley 4280

Join the GLBT Center for the screening of the film Cruel and Unusual, which depicts the experiences of transgender women forced to serve their sentence in men’s prisons. This film contains graphic descriptions of sexual violence and self-harm and brief nudity. A discussion of the film will follow.

Letter Writing Campaign

The Spectrum of Sex: Exploring Intersex Identities and the Relationship to Gender Workshop

Time:  1:00-3:00 p.m
Location:  Talley 4280

The GLBT community often discusses the spectra of gender and sexual orientation, but fewer GLBT individuals and their allies have thought about the spectrum of sex. Intersex identities are influenced by chromosomal, hormonal and structural differences that are part of the human experience of “sex.” Join the GLBT Center in a two-hour exploration of the definition of intersex, its relationship to gender identity and expression and ways to affirm intersex identities.

Making Space Series: GitHub’s February Keeney

Time:  4:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Location:  D.H. Hill Auditorium

February Keeney is passionate about building inclusive workplaces and online communities. She will discuss how she leverages her experiences and perspective to foster greater understanding of privilege and intersectionality. Currently, Keeney is the engineering manager for the Community & Safety team at GitHub and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil

Time:  6:00 – 6:30 p.m.
Location:  Free Expression Tunnel

Every year the lives lost due to anti-transgender violence are remembered and memorialized during vigils across the globe. Join the GLBT Center and T-Files, NC State’s transgender peer support group, as we observe Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Martine Rothblatt has had quite a hand in making the world what it is today. She is a telecommunications lawyer, founder and CEO of United Therapeutics and co-founder of Sirius Radio. Come hear about her experiences and perspectives at Hunt Library.
