As new students begin to explore campus throughout the summer, many of them will wander through Talley Student Union. On the first floor, across from the bookstore, is a welcoming area known as the “Cultural Hearth.” Furnished with comfortable chairs around a fireplace, the Hearth is a great place to have conversations and meet friends and is the site of cultural events and programs throughout the year.

On the back wall of the Hearth area, be sure to see the “Wolfpack in Many Languages” wall art, created by NC State student Fernanda Duarte, a Fulbright and CAPES-Ministry of Education/Brazil Scholar and Ph.D. Candidate in Communication, Rhetoric and Digital Media. The piece covers the entire wall and is both a world and ‘word’ map featuring the well-known NC State slogan in multiple languages.

The sidewalls of the Hearth area house two large display cases. The cases contain art and informational displays that change on a rotating basis. The Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity and the Office of International Affairs are proud to show off the current “At Home in the World” themed display, a collaboration that showcases photo collages from students currently studying abroad along with some beautiful and colorful international artifacts.
