Next Women’s Center Book Club Selection is Brené Brown Bestseller

Women's Center Lounge

The Women’s Center Book Club has selected its spring semester title. We will be reading The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are by Brené Brown (Hazelden, 2010).

What is fear, and what is your deepest fear? Society often leads the individual to bury fear, but is it holding you back? After hearing the shared experiences of women around campus, the Women’s Center and the African American Cultural Center honored these stories by collaborating to preserve and promote the essence of self-care. The creation of a book club focused on the overall health and well-being of students, faculty and staff at NC State. Continuing this tradition, the Women’s Center is building a culture of community and conversation by inviting the campus to engage in its second book club. This spring, with The Gifts of Imperfection, a New York Times bestseller by Brené Brown featured on Super Soul Sundays, we are welcoming our community of scholars to embrace your whole self on a journey of self-reflection and growth.

The Gifts of Imperfection takes seemingly dark emotions such as fear, guilt, shame and sorrow, and uses them to lead us towards what Brown calls wholehearted living, the art of embracing your full self. Using traditional research, she dares us to take on and see the impossible, loving and celebrating ourselves to a point of worthiness.

Guided by educational standards rooted in literacy, empowerment, advocacy and justice work, the book club will meet every Tuesday beginning January 24, 2017 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. in the Women’s Center, Talley 5210. Books are provided free, courtesy of the Women’s Center. Take advantage of a perfect opportunity for those seeking community, desiring to dig deeper, longing for dynamic change, or those simply seeking to engage in research in a new way. See the Women’s Center Facebook page for more information and to sign up.
