OIED’s Equal Opportunity and Equity unit welcomes David Elrod as its new assistant equal opportunity officer.

Elrod graduated from Gardner-Webb University in 2003 with a B.S. in mathematics and from Appalachian State University in 2007 and 2015 with a master’s in higher education administration and a doctorate in educational leadership. He comes to NC State from Appalachian State University, where he served as director of the Office of Student Conduct, Title IX steering committee member and chair of the university’s policy committee on Title IX.

Elrod has spent the past 14 years working in education, with the last 12 years within student development at universities. He has also worked in university housing and financial aid, has taught high school and community college mathematics and has taught graduate courses in college student development and higher education administration programs, including College Teaching, Organization and Governance of Higher Education, and Ethics and Law for the Professional Practice. His research interests include leadership development, policy development and implementation and Title IX.

His presentations include the Appalachian Leadership Forum, where he developed several ethics-focused tracts; trainings with faculty and staff, university housing and student conduct boards; national presentations; and facilitating the Association for Student Conduct Administrators Title IX and Sexual Misconduct Institute in 2016. In 2016, his dissertation research, Prompt and Equitable: A Critical Study of Sexual Violence Policies and Procedures at University of North Carolina System Institutions, was recognized by the Association for Student Conduct Administrators (ASCA) as the national dissertation of the year. David has served in state and national positions, including state coordinator for North Carolina and south regional coordinator for ASCA and on the Campus Safety and Violence Prevention leadership team for Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA).
