Common Reading Gives Focus to African American Community

For the second consecutive year, NC State’s Common Reading Program has brought focus to issues of importance relating to the African American community. Read a review of this year’s selection by Austin Butler, an NC State senior in Science, Technology and Society with a minor in English.

Filmmaker Byron Hurt Examines Impact of Soul Food

On Wednesday, June 20, 2017, over 175 local college students, Triangle residents and food justice activists came together for a screening of the critically-acclaimed documentary Soul Food Junkies. Sponsored by NC State’s African American Cultural Center in partnership with the Jamie Kirk Hahn Foundation, attendees were ‘edutained’ on the role soul food has played in African American culture and learned about the impact of America’s class-based apartheid in its food system.

Qwen Ballard: Advancing the Black Male Initiative

Qwen Ballard will receive his master’s degree in higher education administration on Saturday. He also earned his B.A. in business and marketing education with a concentration in entrepreneurship at NC State. He has held the position of program coordinator of the Black Male Initiative, has been active with the Higher Education Association and is originally from Wilson, NC.
