The Diversity Digest is the e-newsletter of the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity. The Digest is published weekly during the academic year and monthly during summer.

The GLBT Center and the Center for Student Leadership, Ethics, and Public Service (CSLEPS) have established an Alternative Service Break (ASB) trip to San Francisco that gives students the opportunity to think critically about how identity and social justice are related.

NC State Notches High Rank in Engineering

NC State appears prominently in the February 23, 2017 issue of Diverse Issues in Higher Education with two national rankings. In its “Top Producers of African-American Graduates,” the publication lists the top 100 producers of undergraduate and graduate degrees awarded to African-American students in business, education, engineering and social sciences.

Tunnel of Oppression Tackles Tough Issues

NC State aims to provide impactful experiences. Feedback from prior years has indicated that the annual Tunnel of Oppression rates as one of the most impactful experiences offered on campus. And it lasts just thirty minutes.

NC State Leaders Update Campus on Diversity Initiatives

University leaders reaffirmed NC State’s strong support of diversity and inclusion on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at the Campus Diversity Conversation in Stewart Theatre. Thirteen areas provided updates on the diversity initiatives occurring during the 2016-17 academic year.

Meet Rachel Banawa, ASIA President

Rachel Banawa is a graduating senior majoring in psychology from Old Bridge, New Jersey. She is president of Asian Students in Alliance (ASIA), a sister of Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., and a mental health ambassador in the Counseling Center. She also dances with Fusion Dance Crew. She has also served on the executive boards for the Asian Students Association and the Multicultural Greek Council.

LaTonya Johnson is a master’s student in liberal studies with a concentration in social psychology who exemplifies giving back. Find out how she has worked to make a path for women, beginning with herself, many others at home and abroad, and now, her own young daughter.

Angela Gay is the graduate programming assistant in the Women’s Center. She is currently in her first year of the Educational Leadership, Policy, and Human Development (ELPHD) Scholar Leader Higher Education doctoral program.

Physics Students Think and Do

When inappropriate messages were posted on a social media network last fall, physics students Austyn Long and Elliott Holliday, both juniors, turned their thoughts into action. Dr. Sharonda LeBlanc, a post-doc at UNC Chapel Hill in chemistry and physics and co-chair of the NC Women of Color Research Network regional chapter, joined them.
