In 2015, NC State's Native American students accomplished an important milestone for the Native community and for NC State: the first annual commemoration of Indigenous Peoples' Day in place of Columbus Day.

GLBT Center to Host Workshop on Racial Justice on October 12

As part of the lineup of workshops for the 2016-2017 GLBT Advocate Program, the GLBT Center will host a “What is Racial Justice?” workshop on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 from 3:00- 5:00 p.m. in Talley Student Union, Room 3222. This two-hour workshop is open to NC State undergraduates, graduate students, staff, faculty and alumni as well as interested members of the local community. The workshop will help participants contextualize contemporary conversations and events within our specific history of race relations, understand the ways racism operates (interpersonally, culturally, institutionally) and reflect on the ways each of us can and must play a role in creating cultural change.

To Embrace or Deny: Cultural Values and Emotional Health Workshop on October 12

This Hispanic Heritage Month identity workshop hosted by the Counseling Center will focus on exploring Hispanic cultural values, such as familismo, personalismo, respecto, etc., and the positive, negative and complicated effect those values have on one's emotional health. NC State DIVE (Diversity and Inclusion Experience) Topic: Sexual Assault Prevention

DIVE will be having a general body meeting next Wednesday, October 12, 2016 in Carmichael 2014 at 6:00 p.m. Join us as we have a discussion on sexual assault prevention followed by our attendance at the Poetic Social Justice Night hosted by the Women's Center.

What Students Really Think About Religious Diversity – Free Webinar October 13

Engaging students in meaningful diversity experiences is central to the work of higher education, yet only recently have diversity-oriented activities expanded to encompass religion and worldview. The effectiveness of interfaith activities may be enhanced by findings from the Interfaith Diversity Experiences and Attitudes Longitudinal Survey (IDEALS), a national study aimed at identifying the high-impact practices most conducive to students’ interfaith learning and engagement. Alyssa Rockenbach (NC State) and Matthew Mayhew (Ohio State), co-principal investigators of the study, will present a webinar on the findings in partnership with the Council of Independent Colleges and Interfaith Youth Core. The presentation, "What Students Really Think About Religious Diversity" will be offered for free on Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016, 1:00-2:00 p.m.

"It's On Us" Call to Action to be Held by Student Government on October 13

The “It’s On Us” Campaign is a cultural movement aimed at fundamentally shifting the way we think and talk about sexual assault. The campaign seeks to reframe the conversation surrounding sexual assault in a way that empowers, educates and engages college students to do something, big or small, to prevent it. Student Government will be hosting a Call to Action on behalf of the campaign on October 13, 2016 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. on Stafford Commons featuring guest performers, speakers and giveaways.

Come see the Film Confirmation About Anita Hill, Starring Kerry Washington

Women's and Gender Studies and the UAB Films Committee will show the HBO film Confirmation starring Kerry Washington on October 19, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in Witherspoon Cinema. As you all may know, this film was created to re-explore the then Supreme Court Justice nominee, Clarence Thomas' trial for sexual harassment of former employee Anita Hill (Washington). Following the showing, there will be a panel discussion with Dr. Blair LM Kelley (@profblmkelley), historian and NC State assistant dean of interdisciplinary studies and international programs, and Duke University Professor Mark Anthony Neal (@NewBlackMan), author of New Black Man and creator of @LeftOfBlack.

Dr. DeLeon Gray: "Making Scholastic Activities Worthwhile for Black Adolescents"

Dr. DeLeon Gray is assistant professor of educational psychology at NC State. His research focuses on the ways in which students' achievement, motivation and school behavior may be traced back to interpretations of their own social encounters.
