First Annual OIED Managers Conference a Big Draw

On Monday, March 10, 2014, OIED hosted the first annual NC State Conference on Leadership and Diversity for Managers. Drawing a full capacity of approximately 100 attendees to the new Talley Student Union ballrooms, the conference packed 15 different break-out session choices on Diversity, Tools, Leadership, and Communication into a full day of education for NC State supervisors and managers.

Conference co-chair Dr. Deb Luckadoo, Director of Staff Diversity in the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity, took the podium at 8:30AM to welcome participants and introduce Dr. Mike Mullen, Dean and Vice Chancellor in the Division of Academic and Student Affairs, whose keynote address, "Diversity: A Key to Leadership" included personal stories from his own background and experiences. Participants also attended four 50-minute break-out sessions during the day. Presenters hailed from all over campus. Popular sessions included "Extraversion and Intoversion in the Workplace: What 10 Seconds Feels Like, the Power of an Agenda, and Why Silence is (Sometimes) Golden," presented by Claire Jeffries, Assistant Director, Alumni and Student Affairs, Poole College of Management; "Communication Skills for Leading a Diverse Workforce," presented by Ursula Hairston, Assistant Vice Provost for Equal Opportunity, Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity; and "Integrating Competing and Shared Values to Achieve Organizational Goals," presented by Christopher Hitch, Director, Shelton Leadership Center. Session choices were all highly rated, with all 15 workshops receiving a 3 or higher on a 4-point scale. The day ended with a closing workshop given by co-chair Rachel Monteverdi, Family and Consumer Sciences Agent, NC Cooperative Extension, Franklin County.
